What would the death rate be for 16 ordered chicks?

It may be a little late this time, if your order is already in the process, but you can ask for a certain delivery date. I ordered my chicks first of this month, with delivery that I requested in May.

I ordered 15 and got 24 or 25.....not sure just yet.......NO DOA!!!!

Firebomb, do you know what kind those are? I got some that look jsut like that today, but have no idea what they are (other than cute bantams)

InsaneBreeder: I believe there are extra BO's and Partridge Rock's.....I ordered 5 of three breeds and one one breed came with five so the extra must be in those breeds.

Embkm: The yellow ones are Buff Orpington's and the Brownish colored ones are New Hampshire Red's and the black and white ones are Partridge Rock's.

Edit: The Brown ones are partridge rocks and the black and white ones are the packaging peanuts.....their Australorp's.

Im ordering 6 barred rocks and 6 RIRs from a local feed store who orders from a local hatchery here in ohio or ideal in Texas, depending on what you order. I was hopeing for 6 and 6 survivors but haveing read this and other posts, should i order more? Then again, i dont want 14 and 14 healthy chicks! With the added space they'll need later! Wait, maybe 14 and 14 aint so bad??? Hmmmm???

That's what I'm thinking--that more might not be a bad idea. I thought I might order just 10, but then I thought 12, then I became worried about DOA and went to 16. I'm still not sure.

If you read through the posts here, you'll see that the pattern tends to be *either* huge losses, nearing 100%, from shipping and/or some sort of illness *or* a very tiny loss, maybe one or two weak chicks, from shipping and early in the process, with the occasional "I did something stupid" loss later in the game.

So getting a whole ton extra probably isn't going to help much. Getting a couple extra will guard against weak chicks getting lost in shipping. Nothing will help you if you don't take care of them, or if there is a major problem in shipping or serious illness in the chicks. So a small number of extras, no more than say, 5% of your total order, seems to be the statistical winner, anyway.
