I would have asked for the name of the hospital and room number so you could 'send flowers' to the brother. I've seen people deal with these kind of folks all the time and wonder why they bother. I call them high maintenance employees. When they do show up for work they do a good job, but getting them to show up can be tricky. Lay down the law with this guy. You give an inch he'll take a mile. They ain't worth the bother.
I had a coworker call me at 10 pm stating that her baby was sick and she was going to take him to the emergency room in the morning to make sure the baby was okay. She asked if I would work for her. I told her to take the baby to the emergency room right now and call me as soon as she found out what was going on. She came up with all kinds of excuses. Her husband had the car, and the other car wasn't running blah, blah. Then she said her cell phone battery was dying so I offered to call an ambulance to get her son to the hospital. She suddenly changed her tune and said she could probably get her mother to take the baby in the morning and she'd be at work.
I mean come on! I never knew one could plan an emergency visit! Now if she had said her baby was sick and she needed to be with him, I would have understood her dilemma and worked for her. Just don't lie about it.
And I actually had an employee call and said she was too tired to work. She was a high maintenance drama queen who should have been fired long ago. To this day I have no idea why the boss put up with her for 5 years.
