What a handsome guy! And what a kind soul you are to care about him.

Is there a rescue group in your area that will take him? I have fostered for groups that are a network of foster homes. If there is one in your area you could check into that.

If you do decide to take him in and find him a permanent home, you could ask the Humane Society or local groups to place 'courtesy postings' on their site. More exposure = finding forever home faster.

Or, could you foster him through the Humane Society? That way if he needs vet care, they will provide it, and you will avoid any ownership issues.

Either way, make sure his previous family surrenders him IN WRITING. You don't want to do this wonderful thing for him only to end up with them whining to the authorities that 'someone stole their dog.'

What a sweet looking dog!!

After rereading this entire thread............I would definitely keep this new dog and rehome one of the problem dogs I already had. What a pleasure it would be to have this dog who is so loving and willing to be a pleasant family member. One of the problem dogs might just find he is better off being the "only" dog in a family?

All of our animals were abandoned or unwanted and we took them in. Bo, a shep/chow mix was about 10 months old and wandering the neighborhood. He showed up and has been with us for 11 years.

Precious, our rotti, was also astray and in heat. She was being followed around by a pack of 5 males when I rescued her with a cinnamon pop tart! The vet figured she was about 1. She has been with us for 8 years this fall.

Daisy - our newest dog - is a boxer mix who was abandoned in our neighborhood at 3 months old. Our landlord told us he would bend the 2 dog rule if we would just give her a home. That was almost a year ago.

We picked up Oliver at church. He was 5 weeks old and the folks said if the kittens didn't get gone that day, they would meet the bottom of a water bucket! So we brought him home and Precious raised him and now he is the meanest cat this side of the Mississippi!

Lastly, Mooch showed up 2 Christmases ago on our porch. My husband fed him and he never left(hence the name). We kept him for a bit before finally getting him neutered. I guess I was hoping someone would claim him. Anyway he and Oliver have a hate/hate relationship, probably since having 2 un-neutered male cats in a small house isn't the best idea.

Truth be known, our chicken raising started the same way. We got 6 hens and 1 roo from a guy who had bred them for what he wanted and then unloaded them when they were no longer useful. I don't know why he got rid of the RIRs. They are really good layers!

Then our flock expanded when a gal from church had her chicken coop raided by weasels. She didnt want the other hens killed so we got them from her.

I have re-homed all but the RIRs so I can concentrate on my Orpingtons, but we are suckers for animals in trouble around here! Big or small, 2 legs or 4, we take 'em in. I f I can find homes I do, if not they stay.

You are another animal-angel! He looks like our foster dog, Sierra! We've had her a year now, and we still hope to find her a good home.

I did that same thing with a neighbor's chocolate lab. He kept coming over & visiting us, so I finally took him in. He kept running away from them, and I was afraid he'd get hit by a car. I found a lab rescue that was fantastic! They took him and he is now a happy boy!

Try to find a good rescue if you can't keep him. Where are you located?

Everyone has been so encouraging, I really appreciate it!!!

I love hearing the stories of other rescues, and I have done some fostering in the past where the outcome was really really great... so my husband has suggested we hang on to him for a bit(YAY)!!! That gives me a little time with him to work on additional obedience and give him a nice(read: much needed) bath, and get him on a good healthy diet. Good natured and obedient pets are easier to find homes for I think. Ohhh, and I forgot to add that he has been really good around our chickens. The last time he showed up here his eyes were glued on my husband in an adoring manner and he totally ignored the chickens(my husband was in the tractor/coop at the time).

We are in SW Washington. But I am not against shipping a dog if the home is right. Or finding a rescue that will help in cross-country transport.

Thanks again everyone for all the wonderful heartwarming stories and suggestions and encouragement. It really does mean a lot to me, and I have this really great feeling of finding him the perfect home. I am going to talk to my husband about having the rightful owners sign the dog over to us. That way I have it in writing that we can let the dog go to a wonderful forever home.
