What would YOU do?

What a stupid woman. It's good that you talked to the police, now if she tries anything, they will already know the background.

She was probably spoiled throughout her life, and now expects to get her way all the time.

What a wing nut!!! I'm glad the cops are on your side. I would agree with whoever mentioned a care bill if she comes back. Petsitting usually runs something like $10/animal/day. That works out to about $1800/bird. Somehow I don't think she would be willing to pay for that. Good Luck!!!!

I can't beleive anyone would even think of demanding the chickens return.. I think I would have said 'heck no'! Let her bully someone else into doing what she wants them to do.. but I WOULD put a two locks (one on the top and one on the bottom)..on the coop when I was away. Good luck Dixie

In dog rescue, this sort of thing happens fairly frequently. Rescuers have even ended up in jail for supposed theft. That's why many experienced rescuers use an "owner release form" that is signed by the previous owners, so they CAN'T accuse you of theft at some later date.

I'm glad this has turned out well with the cops. Keep your gate locked!

I'd say everyone that is "given" birds or anything else, in the future should tell the person giving them that they can't receive free gifts and tell them you will buy them for $1.00 and that you must have a receipt marked paid in full.

That would put an end to the nonsense.

If they come back wanting them back for a buck, tell them that was the market value at that time, they are much more now, or that they simply aren't for sale.

In this case you were doing the woman a favor and as usual, good deeds often come back to bite you.

She reported them as stolen are you kidding me? I wonder if she also told the police that they were "stolen" 7 months ago. I'm glad things worked out. People in this world are losing their minds.

That is just wrong if that previous owner is on this chat and reading shame on you for your sqitzo and threatening actions

you gave your animals to them and to come back and say that your taking them is just wrong
Sorry this has had to happen to you can't believe some people these days and their stupidity :thun gets my dander up

keep up a good fight for your birds and don't let that women get her hands on them and if she shows up tell her your giving the police a call and as well the contractor to claim the money she owes him

I think you're handling this well and I sure hope she does not bring further grief. Another thing you might consider is informing your local SPCA so that they know some animals were already rescued and that you are protecting them because they're yours. If this woman genuinely wants more chicks it's the right time of year to brood some.
