I've heard that the vanilla scented trees for making your car smell nice will repel flies.

However, I have misters going during this terrible heat and the moisture seems to attract them so in some areas of my barn, the little pine trees aren't helping much. I think I'm going to get some sticky fly strips and see if that takes care of them.

We had a problem with flys. I accidently hatched some in the brooder room. I spilled some water a d then threw some shavings on it to dry it up. I forgot about it and it was hot and humid and a few days later :p. I had a zillion flys. I'm not used to how fast flys grow here in the Midwest. In California it's never humid just hot and dry and flies don't grow that fast. Anyway those fly strips were life savers, it took a bunch of them but it got rid of every last one. Now if I spill water I dry it right up with a towel or rag!! I'm breeding chickens not flies. YUCK

I try also to keep things as cleaned up as possible, but it has been tough this year since I started a new shift with 4 - 12 hour days and 1-8 hour day, with these kind of hours I am using the help of hubby and oldest daughter, I am thankful for their help but they are not as picky about things as I am...I also use fly strips and the vanilla tree's, with the brooder in the garage it is impossible to eliminate flies all together,,,Yes my car gets parked outside so the chicks can have the space.

And the Orpingtons, too. Ended up with 1 pullet and 7 roos.

I am trying to decide if I want to keep a roo, or just the pullet. You can see the pullet and 3 of the roos in the picture.

Oh my gosh!!! That is horrible! Now I'm developing a fear of the little buggers.

I knew that they were nasty bugs to have around, but didn't realize they could cause so many potential problems!
