They are "sitting ducks" for any predator looking for a meal or a good chase. I raise them for several reasons. #1 freezer camp. I sell and trade the eggs. I also sell and trade the live birds or processed. They don't take as long to grow up as chickens so you get eggs faster and they hatch in less time. Well depending on which breed of quail. I just got my 5 acre yard mowed for 5 processed quail and a trio of live birds for him to start raising his own.

You really should not house with chickens, they have no resistance to chicken diseases so they are badly susceptible to them. They are not free range type birds, they are game birds and will revert to the wild if free.

Yeah quail are absolutely nothing like chickens, they eat differently in some cases and must be housed seperately from chickens and waterfowl. they are classified as gamebirds and carry diseases that are not harmful to themselves but will kill chickens as chickens carry a disease that is fatal to quail but doesn't have an effect on them (as in the chickens are carriers but the disease is not an issue for them, they are immune to it, the gamebirds however will meet certain death). Quail are perfectly happy in a pen with proper sq footage per bird, as long as they arent over crowded they are fine. They do enjoy cut grass and dirt to dust in and are best kept on wire.
