OKAY-- I am new at this. I have looked all over the net for the answer, and now I'm turning to ya'll for help. This newborn chick, he doesn't seem interested in eating and drinking. I have dipped his beak in the water. A few times I have put water on my finger and put it up to his beak. He does drink it, seem a little perked up, then pecks at feed a little. He also doesn't walk or waddle around much.
Am I just freaking out too soon? Should I be worried? Feel free to laugh at me if I am just overreacting, but in addition to laughing tell me what to expect from a healthy-going-to-live-probably-chick, and a oh-my-he-might-die-chick.
Yes, he is warm enough, the food and brooder is dry. I know that much.

They can take up to 2 days before they eat or drink after they hatch. You are doing right by dipping its beak in to let it know to eat and drink and showing it where it is.
Good Luck with the rest. Your little one should be fine.
The first day they are still digesting egg yolk so not really hungry or thirsty . Plus they have to learn to walk. Tomorrow he should be up and around.

You may want to go get some "save a chick" from you local feed store/tsc to add to the water so when you do get him to drink he is getting enough nourishment till he really catches on to eating and drinking.
They are always the first to hatch for me too!! Any tufts? Congratulations!!
I don't see tuffs yet
But here is one of those chickens follys...... I hatched 4 Araucana & 3 Austrolorp. Pulled out the shells so I am sure!! 1 chicks is redish brown, the rest black & yellow.
Now to figure out which black & yellow are Araucana.
Can Araucana have straight combs? That is what I was going to go by. Austrolorps have straight combs.
Yes, Australorps have a larger straight comb, like an Orpington. Araucanas have smaller three row combs called pea combs. As chicks it is flatter and wider then Australorps. You will definately be able to tell when they grow. The Australorp will grow overnight
