O.k., just pulled all the males out, there are 11 girls and 8 boys total. We left the only white male in the ladies for the moment and watching to see if I missed any other males, so far he is the only one crowing. In the pen with all males we did find one that all the others are afraid of and kept trying to get away from. Took him out and all the other males settled nicely, My rouge male!

so, with 11 females how many males can I keep 2 or 3?? Going to be listing the others on CL today all but a couple as back up.

I also learned the hard way. Chewed up and scalped hen.... Took it down to 2 males and 8-9 females and all was well. I would think 2 males is good. Thats 5 1/2 girls a piece.

I had 4 hens to 1 male and about a month ago I found 2 of the hens injured. One was pretty bad. She was bleeding from her head. I got them out and one was able to go back in about a week. The other just went back yesterday and the male went after her again. So I moved her to a different cage and all seems to be going fine. I know it's a hen because she lays eggs and her chest isn't brown. (JB's) So I think sometimes they just don't like another one and try to get rid of them the only way they know how. Thats to kill it. I"m surprised this last one even lived much less has no brain damage. She would freak out and beat her head on the cage and have it all bloody and gross looking. I had to keep her covered up so she would stop. When her head healed I was able to uncover her till the scab fell off and she even grew back feathers. She does have a few small bald spots but nothing that would make others pick at it.

But when they come of age of breeding I always remove the males and separate them to at least 1 male per 4 hens or less.

No problem.

Now, send some brown IBs our way...

Up front is the white egg mix from MrHeinz-you can't see it well in this photo but the feathers on top of both wings stick up. What's that from? She (i hope) has wings on her wings, so she's Angel. Hatched 11/27.

Far right is the IB chick. That beautiful white penciling is coming in all over his chest. Hatched a month ago, 11/15.

I'm not a silkie lover, but I saw this lavender at a swap last week and somehow it made it home with me...
and the chick in the back is from my BR X AS

I thought I would try out my new camera DH gave me for Christmas. Yep, early. He's never been good at waiting. These babies are some I hatched from little ameracauna mom and sebright mom's eggs.

With quail I've seen both male and female being the bully. I had one who was sweet to us but would kill any quail housed with her so she had to live alone.
