WHAT YA GOT SWAP Chat Thread

Okay guys I need help. I have an 11 yr old going on 12 in November. He is going into 6th grade and he can't read. I have been helping him at home but he won't even try. The school gave up on him but, don't want me to hold him back either. I have tried everything and at my wits end with him. When I try to help he just sits there and looks at me. If the word is "how" he will say "had" I'll tell him no its not "had" try again. and a minute later he'll say "had'...... And he will keep doing that until I get frustrated and tell him the word or tell him to go play. He just try's my patients and it works.

I have printed things out from the computer and even let him try activities on the computer. I can't afford anything expensive but, I am at a loss. Has anyone else ever had this problem. He also cry's a lot when you try to get him to read. I was thinking he was dyslexia but now I am thinking not. I am thinking it is stubborness because it is hard and he don't want to take the time to learn it.

He is Pervasive Developmental Delay, Obsessive Compulsive Syndome & ADHD. The school wants me to put him in a handicap class where they can just push him aside but I have been fighting them on it. I really need help. He is already in a slow learning class. He is smart but just stubborn.

Not to air out my DH on the boards, but.. DH has severe Dyslexia. The schools gave up on him as well. His family never helped him at all. He learned alot of things by reading to our own children.
I would find someone to test him for it. He sounds so frustrated. This kind of stuff really breaks my heart. Children have such a hard time with things in todays world, I really think we put too much on them. Teachers do not care enough about the kids, the ones who do.... they get pushed out of teaching. Our son has a mild case of it. I found that he is really interested in World of Warcraft, so I let him get an account on my sisters. His reading and word comprehension has picked up just by playing the game. There are parts where it reads or acts out the lore in a movie, and it prints the story out in words at the bottom of the screen. He reads along with it.

He is very frustrated along with me. The school has never offered me one of there free tutors and when I ask they just act like they don't hear me. The school hates me, because I don't let them do whatever they want with my kids and I fight them on it. I have kinda the same thing going on with my 9 yr old daughter. Except she can read a little bit. They want to put her in that class also. I contacted a lawyer and they are working on my case for both of my kids. the Principal said he was gonna take away both of my kids IEP (slow learning classes) then they were going to just throw them into a regular class and they would just fall further behind and fail and be stuck in the same grade.

I am not real religous but my school is. They take our kids to church once a week for and hour. The school is Apostolic. Since we are not apostolic they don't like us. Now not all of them are the same I now a few that are very nice but my kids are friends with some of the apostolic parents kids and they won't let there kids come over and play or let ours over at there house.

Like you said The one teacher that cared about and helped my 2 kids the most they got rid of. The Handicap class that they have there they get a lot more money the more kids they put in that class. I have talked to a few other parents where they said they are trying to put there kids in that class also. I know that 2 of my kids are a little slow to catch on in the learning department I admit it. They do belong in the slow learning class but not a Handicap class. If they put them in there they will loose all of there friends and get made fun of. I already have a bulling problem with my son with a bully on there bus. The kid constantly beats the crap out of my kid to where I had to take matters into my own hands and I now have to drive my kids to and from school 10 mins each way. The school did nothing about it nor did the parents when I contacted them.

Oh Girl!!! Sounds like you need to move your kids to a different school!!! If they are in a private school (which it sounds like they are) then you really need to move them to a different one. The school won't like that at all because they will loose money, so I would tell them the plan 1st & see if they start being more cooperative. If not, move those babies!!! I have 6 children & 5 of them have special needs of 1 kind or another. 3 of them already have IEP's and the other 2 may end up with them in the next year depending on progress. Definitely have the kids tested for Dyslexia. There are MANY forms of it & with your son's other disabilities it is very likely there as well. 2 of mine who have IEP's have a form of dyslexia along with their other issues. They get extra help with reading, including a tutor & aid in the classroom along with help in special classes as needed. All 3 of them have had special assistance in the classroom & improved greatly. I had to do a lot of fighting to get their assistance in place tho. If you need any specific details or assistance just PM me & I will do everything I can to help. We aren't all that far apart & I am WELL aware of our state's laws governing special needs children.

I have 4 kids and the oldest 2 are the ones that need the help.
My 3rd is very smart. He reads beyond his levels needed. My youngest that isn't in school yet though I think is gonna have trouble. I can't get him to go potty on the toilet and he is 3 yrs old. So looks like I am gonna have 3 special needs children.

Sounds like you and me need to get together. Sounds like we are both stressed out moms.

I help them all at home as much as possible.

My oldest will be 18 next month, so I've been at this for a few years now...lol Let me know if you need help dealing with the school & I will see what I can come up with. And, from personal experience, if you know it's the best thing for your children to move them then do it! Children make new friends & dads will adjust as well. You have to do what you know is best for your children. Oh, BTW, if you have an issue with the school taking your kids to church or feel you are being discriminated against due to religion then you DEFINITELY have a case & I would take it to the newspaper 1st & the courts 2nd. Bad publicity for the school is something they will have to answer to & may solve your problem VERY quickly. You are talkin to a Momma who had to drag a teacher & principal off her 6 year old because they were sitting on him rubbing his face in the floor to restrain him. I have NEVER had to have help restraining my son & could even restrain both of my older boys at the SAME time by my self at that point. The 1 they were sitting on has Asperger's & they are darn lucky all I did was pull them off when I walked in on that situation. I told them twice to let him up that I had him & they just looked at me like idiots & went back to rubbing his face in the floor. Needless to say I pulled him from the school the same day & turned them in to Children's Services. Had another incident at a school with the same child where they called the cops to come restrain him instead of just calling me. At least the cops had sense enuf to turn him loose when I told them to. Both times he popped right up, stopped screaming & did exactly what I told him to. Sometimes "officials" are just "officially IDIOTS"

Wow. It's best if I don't say anything right now. I'm a teacher and there are a few more of us that are teachers.

I know there are EXCELLENT teachers out there. Luckily my son ended up with a FANTASTIC teacher in 3rd grade who has special needs children of his own & teaches the special needs class. We absolutely loved him. He flat out told my son what his options were & didn't waver on them. He kept me well informed & I was able to work closely with him to get my son on track after all the CRAP from the other schools.
Many times, the teachers are caught in the middle & have to do as Administration tells them. Other times, the teacher IS the issue. More often, the teacher & Administration BOTH have issues in a "sub-par" school system.

I had a foster son for 7 month. He just moved on to a therapeutic foster home last month. He is 12 and heading to 7th grade and reads and writes on a 1st grade level. He was in a contained classroom but was upgraded to a resource classroom. He is very smart just can't grasp the reading/ writing.
Our school was VERY helpful. His IEP gave him extra individual reading/writing, a scrib to help take notes and a program called Fast Forward, a PC program that started with basic phonics.
A very slow progress...but I was so proud when he would sit at the dinner table and sound out words from the condiment jars.

I wish you the best Michelle....

for patience ! I know how frustrating it is but imagine how frustrating AND embarrassing it is for the child.

And not that it is any of my business...if you have medicaid, get some outside testing done. IMO

Definitely on the testing!!! And yes, it all takes time, but the hardest part is getting the needed resources in place to begin with.

I don't mind them going to church in school. I actually like it kind of. Just because I can't take all 4 of my kids in church they wouldn't sit still. There are a few teachers at our school that I just love. But there are a few that I would like to smack too. My husband and I witnessed the Lunch lady screaming at my 9yr old daughter on tack and field day and she cam crying to us. My husband went up to her and asked how she felt about herself after degrating a 9yr old child like that.

I have walked in on a couple of teachers mistreating my daughter. They just yank her around by her arm like she is a rag doll and there is nothing I can do about it. My daughter comes home to me on a daily basis crying saying that the teacher was mean to her. I have complained to the school board and the principal but I don't want to cause a stink.

My kids are on medicaid and have had testing done. I haven't had the dislexia testing done yet. I have been trying to figure out who to take them to see for that. I think it is the neurologist but I am not sure.

I have had both of my kids to the Head of genetics at Cleveland clinic & Akron General and they said they have no right to put them in the handicap class that they don't belong there. I have gotten it in writing from the doctors but the school won't listen.

I am sorry if I have offended othere teachers on here. I am not saying teachers are bad and I know the ones on here aren't. Like I had said there are some great teachers at our school and there are some bad ones.
