My girls are nearly 2 weeks old. After taking the advice of some of the 'elders' here, I gave them a hunk of sod to play with and eat. After ingesting a good deal of dirt (a/k/a/ 'grit'), I diced up a bit of cantaloupe and sprinkled some chick crumbles on top. Looked like peach cobbler! Well, as I'm typing this, they're chirping away happily, eating up their treat for the day.
If you feed the wild birds black oil sunflower seed, check under and around the feeders for sunflower sprouts...made a big splash with a handful of sprouts earlier!
I'm glad to hear about the bread, I have been giving mine a couple of slices a day boy do they go crazy over it.. they get so excited they jump up and try to get it out of my hand..
Mine absolutely love cucumbers, especially fresh out
of the garden. I break it in half and hold it up against the wire and they attack it. I hold it up and they will even jump and try to get it. Watching a chicken jump is hilarious.
mine get ALL my leftovers (meat, vegie, starch, dairy)...what ever they leave behind (very little) goes into the compost bin.
My chickens also get to pick through all of the hunting by products. When we clean fish or clean game, the chickens are right there...they get to pick through it all and if I have time, I even will grind all the stuff we won't eat and freeze them in ice cube trays...then they can have a meat treat anytime (just thaw and throw it out there).
