What's Columbian?

I am a newbie and someone earlier pointed out my rooster was part Columbian. I'm fine with that, but. WHAT IS Columbian?

Is Columbian a breed or just a description for the color pattern?

Columbian is a color pattern, a gene. Many breeds have the columbian color/pattern - cochins and rocks and brahmas many others.

Very pretty pattern. There can be buff columbians (buff brahmas) and red columbians.

It's the black in the neck and tail that is your clue.

No, the typical columbian trademark is the groundcolor chest (meaning not black or a dilution thereof) on the males and the equalized groundcolor body in both sexes.
Hackles can be clear, without hackleblack.
Tail can be groundcolor too as in buff.

All these are genetically columbians.

So that could be a columbian splash male?

And an all buff - without black hackles or tail could be carrying columbian as well?

Columbian is a gene which prevents black pigment on the breast & most of the body. It can work in combination with other genes to give various patterns. It seems to have a part in a lot of colours/patterns.
Columbian is also a hobby name given to birds which have black based hackles, flights & tail. This colour is also sometimes referred to as "light".
