Hi,
My chicken started laying less than a week ago, she has been fine until today.

When i let them out today she went into the nest box which is outside and stayed for about half an hour as usual but when she came out she hadn't laid an egg, i wasn't to concerned but about five minutes later she started making loads of noise on and off for about 45 minutes, i am a bit worried as this isn't at all usual for her.

Inside the sleeping area i found another egg that was cracked at first i though it was one of her eggs but it was pale and was more a skin than shell so i suppose its one of my other chickens first eggs?

I don't know if it helps but she's a Dark Sussex

If anyone can help me out here i would really appreciate it.

You found a shell-less egg.
How do you know it wasn't hers? Without the shell, its tough to tell who laid it.
Do you have extra calcium available for them?

Hi,

Thanks for getting back to me!

I don't know it wasn't hers but i thought it must be one of the others as it was laid in a different place from where she lays most days.

I also thought that she probably wouldn't lay an egg and then go into the other nest box.

She is the only laying hen i have at the moment so i thought that it not having a shell might be to do with it being anothers first egg🤷‍♀️

And yes they do have oyster shell grit, layers pellets and i give them egg shells too.

thanks a lot

Oh, I don't know about that...I wouldn't count it out. :gig
New layers can be quite goofy acting, they don't know what they are doing at first and can be confused and anxious, it can take up to a month or so before they get it all figured out. Putting some fake eggs or golf balls in the nest might help show them where to lay. They may scratch around in the nests for weeks before laying, spreading the bedding everywhere. They will scratch around a bit less in nest as they get used to the routine. Meanwhile, eggs everywhere, some of them can be rather funky looking, soft or thin shelled, huge double yolked eggs
