A backyard big enough to put a football field, carved out of the woods
that surround me on three sides. My home sets well back from the road.
Private life.

There's a small babbling brook to the right, runs through the trees I've
left standing. Little arched bridge crosses the stream and leads up into
the woods.

Settin on the porch, you can hear the frogs croaking, maybe see a deer
or two in the yard going for water. Their saltblock is up in the left corner
right at the edge of the woods. They know I'm not going to hunt them.
Never have. So they have no real fear of us.

Tractor path heads up into the woods almost beside the salt block. I cut it
by hand years ago. Now it's my daughters path to her world..."Hana's Woods".
She knows that's her woods, because the sign says it's her woods. You can't
see the paths, but I know they're there. Each one decorated different.

Boo Alley...Bunny Trail...Hobo Camp...Big Tree...Uncle Mike's place...almost two
miles of paths I've cut, wandering in the woods. How many times we've walked
those woods. Have a golf cart, but walk more often than not.

Hana's woods...did I ever tell you that's where we had her birthday partys? Her choice.
I used to spend a lot of time cleaning the woods for her. A few porch swings in the prettiest
spots. I guess someday her and her boyfriend will set there and swing, just like her mommy
and I did in our time.

Go out the back door and cut straight up the hillside, you'll come to a special place. You can
see for forever from up there. Porch swing, grill up there. Little fireplace going on. I told Em
about it one time...I bet she thought it wasn't real. My wife and I use to spend a lot of late
nights up there.

And that's pretty much my back yard. Grass and trees. No coop, no out buildings. Just grass
and trees. Years ago I filled in the small goldfish pond, the hammock, it's gone now too.

The pool, big deck, chicken coop and the wooden swingset set over in the side yard. Runs out
there 70-80 foot, drops over a small bank and picks up the woods and the stream again. That's
where the waterfall is...stream takes about a five foot drop there. Another small bridge, crosses
into another section of the woods, path comes out in the field behind the garage.

Big yard. Pretty when it's mowed. Flowers up close to the house.

Let's see...

- The coop/shed and run

- Our deck with four long planter boxes in which we're growing our peppers, tomatoes, and beans. We have nearly two acres. Of course we're using deck boxes.

- Two garden plots, one with assorted squashes and one with various plants such as potatoes, radishes, and peppers.

- A big hill

- Lots of grass

- Lots of weeds in the grass

- About half an acre of pines and mixed hardwoods

- A rock wall in the woodlot that marks the border of the property

- Lots of stumps, courtesy of the previous owner

- Several woodpiles, also courtesy of the previous owner (for these, he is forgiven the stumps)

- Several good-sized trees, some of which need to join the woodpile/stump legions

- A few fruit trees

- A nice view of the mountains

- Assorted wildlife, including deer, turkeys, birds, and, yes, 'coons, 'possums, foxes, and coyotes

- A couple of patches of tangled bushes, better known as The Tick Farms

- The dog kennel we've sold to our next-door neighbor to protect their rabbit hutches

- An old doghouse that we're thinking about putting in the run so the girls can hang out in it

- A firepit that we've never used, as it's a bit too far down in the yard for our tastes - well, that, and the dogs have torn it apart searching for mice

- Our pool (an Intex Ultra-Frame pool, 20 feet in diameter and four feet deep, and easy to set up and take down - I highly recommend it!)

79 roses.

And they're all varying shades of pink.

(The people who lived before us had a thing for the color.)

We're slowly "replacing" with "non-pink ANYTHING." Hoping free-ranging chickens will help that along.

Nothing really anymore. Mostly junk.
2 broken lawnmowers, some junk that needs taking to the scrap yard, chicken coop that is no longer used

the roof leaks a little (chickens never minded) so it's not even good for dry storage though I keep some things in there like dog crates, tire rims/chains, and ice coolers when they aren't being used, still have my little dog house on wheels that I use for brooding, and a small brooder pen -- the roos just have to move out as soon as they start crowing before anyone complains coz so far chicks are flying below the radar.

A big clothesline with a bug zapper hanging from one end, and a boxed in garden area that is not being used this year. Two dogs of course, but they spend most of the days under the front porch.

We have about 5000 sq feet of backyard which is not very big but big enough. One large corner is for our garden. It's fenced off from the rest of the yard. There are also several fruit trees (mostly peaches) and a grape vine extending from the garden alongside the block wall.
Then there's a lot of sandy dirt and not a whole lot of grass. We also have an outdoor aviary that houses a couple dozen parakeets and about a dozen lovebirds.
The rest of my backyard is the environment around my house, though. There are plenty of places for me to go if my house's backyard doesn't offer me enough entertainment. For example there's a poppy reserve and in the spring after the rains, all the poppies start blooming and you can go hiking over hills that give you a beautiful panoramic view. I like to think of my immediate surroundings as my backyard, too.

Let's see....the backyard doesn't have a whole lot....clothesline, rose bushes, swing set, and a few chicken pens. The side yards are where all the junk is. My dad has piles and piles of wood and tin from tearing down old houses and barns...I guess he wants to make sure the rodents have plenty of hiding places this winter
roll.png
then there's a barn, 2 big 'chicken' buildings, and several smaller pens. There's a tractor (doesn't run), 4 or 5 lawnmowers (most don't run), and lord only knows what else. I think my dad needs to be featured on that "Hoarders" show

ETA: The garden is technically in the front yard....kind of. It is in front of the house but past the fence that is supposed to be pasture.

We have about an acre, surrounded by woods in the back and one side. In the yard we have the coop and run, and a shed that is really two sheds joined together (Siamese sheds?) We have a veggie garden area that is fenced in that has 4 raised beds. One for asparagus, one for tomatoes, one for beans, peas, broccoli, carrots, and lettuces, and one that has some zucchini, but is mostly over taken by some trees that we had planted there when we intended it to be a nursery bed. Life got busy when the time came to transplant them, so they have remained.
There is a large birdhouse mounted on a pole, a picnic table, 5 perennial beds, an apple tree, a birch, a maple, several trees and shrubs that we have planted- a multi-trunked birch, a couple of spruces, a maple, a Pee-Gee Hydrangea, a flowering almond, a smoke bush, a lilac, a button bush, and several ferns. There is also a huge raspberry patch! Near the house, we have a ramp, leading up to a sliding door, that my DP built for my mother to use when she comes to visit, as she has severe arthritis. We are hoping to build a deck one of these days, but for now the ramp holds our kayak. On the side of the yard nearest the driveway is our camper. Sitting in the middle of the lawn are several large clumps of wild daisies, that we mow around because we like them.
