What's in your backyard?

A lot of water that isn't supposed to be there

My back yard contains a woodshed, a bunny barn, the chicken coop, my dog, the garden, the canoe, the fire pit, the compost pile, and the garage.

Our yard is quite a bit of a mess (just ask my wife). There is suppose to be some considerable building going on that will impact our property, so we've put off landscaping until that is done, but it keeps getting pushed out. So, we don't know when / what to do. Last thing we want is to make a bunch of changes and then have to rip it out.

I've actually turned down some TV interviews about our chickens because we would hate to have them video our place.

Oh, that and I'm too cheap to pay for tons of landscaping.

Well, I'll start from my favorite backyard and work down to where I spend most of my time in the outskirts of the city

...we have a 40,000 acre family owned ranch that's been in the family for over 100 years...we plant 2000 acres a year in alfalfa and had over 300 head of cows for calving and lots of cattle over 4 generations, the backyard of the farm house has a big bunkhouse for farm hands (mostly family, seasonally), and 3 house+ size hay barns, many pastures, and horse barns with 5 acre pastures attached, branding shutes, cow barns, tractors, plows, old cedar trees, a well up on the hill that feeds all the troughs, a windmill to pump the water, a couple of big ponds, 2 medium size private living quarters, a 4 car garage with a high side to work on tractors. It's beautiful there but the winters are severe. We usually trailer 12+ horses each summer cross country up north to the ranch each summer for all of us to use. We have several 5+ acres properties with homes and horse pastures for many horses.

Another property is 20 acres of mostly undevoped land with a cabin on it very near the metro city, but we've yet to decide what to do with it. We currently lease it out to ranchers for grazing, but it's one of my favorites. Same with another house property a bit further out of the city that has a couple of acres in the city outskirts that family lives in with a garden and big barns and lots of dogs. Mostly bulldog we rescue, and it's family central for most family gatherings in my state. Then farther out we have a few acres with a huge mobile on it that's set up for horses and livestock, then we have a few metro and indusrial props that we push the limits on for livestock.

We have several more properties that family shares/uses as desired from rural to industrial. Some in the country some in HOA's

. We adapt each as needed since we have a large family with different needs.

Two chicken coops, a 40x15 peacock enclosure, three sheds, horse round pen and paddocks(horses included), horse trailer, remote control airplane trailer, '78 CJ5 Jeep in various stages of reconstruction, 3 raised garden beds, 3D bow hunting targets, woods with a tree stand or two and tons of critters running around.

I have a 1972 POS Chevy PU that belongs to my son-in-law and my daughters cousin. Stored here for the proverbial 2 wks, it's been here for over a year. I'm not that guy. Oh, and it comes with an extra cab in the bed. I am starting to break their shoes to get it out of here.

Our house sits smack dab on the middle of your 3/4 acre lot and was built in the early 1840's. It was once a tea house for the students of the Albion Academy and Normal Institute, a school founded in 1854 and closed in 1894. The tea house was called The Blue Parrot but some neighbors remember it as The Green Parrot. Since it had had a blue roof at that time, I'm sticking "The Blue Parrot'"!

Anyway, the yard is a big circle however, I consider my "backyard" more of a horse shoe shape that includes the "side" yards. The "front" yard has a lawn and a pathetic vinca vine choked flower bed in front of the house and also has two pine/evergreen type trees that house the bird and suet feeders along with a bird bath. I have a porch that I have some potted plants and veggies on it, a bird feeder, and is the home for our American flag. The front yard does not have much of a landscape because of all the buried utility cables, so digging is a pain since I have to have the county out to mark all of the buried cables before I dig.

The "backyard" as most people would see it is an enclosed chain link fenced yard for our 8 dogs. It has a bird bath and one remaining pole left over from the old clothes line. I have bird feeders on it. I also have some iron shepherds hooks that have finch feeders hanging from them. Those are placed by the house in front of the kitchen window so I can watch the birds while I cook.

The side yard closest to the Academy/park next door has an ancient lilac bush, an evergreen type tree planted by the previous owners, and we planed an Elderberry tree and some Sugar Maples in that section. I also planted some roses by the house but those haves since died. I did plant a football mum that is doing great. This is also where we have a second porch the size of a postage stamp. I have hanging tomato planters, some potted veggies and some wind chimes on that porch. A little hanging garden flag festooned with chickens on it is sitting just in front of the porch.

The side yard next to our dairy neighbors next door holds a very old Cherry tree of some tyoe, another evergreen type tree planted by the previous owners, our veggie garden filled with various veggies of all sorts. Last year we planted 2 apples trees, 2 cheery trees (one needs to be replaced tough). This year we plated two peach trees, three pawpaw trees and two American Hazelnut trees.

Completing the front and veggie side yards are the garage and "car port" These are next to the house and hold our old '50 Plymouth (garage) and the meat rabbits and chicken areas (car port).

Um, well I'll start without immediate yard. Two raised bed veggie gardens, one with a cupola. Hot Tub building with a tubthat doesntwork! Just haven't had the $$$ to replace it yet. Threecottage flower beds and an original 200 year old garage. The back half acre has the huge dog pen, the 100sf chicken run and coop and a fire pit. In the woods is our compost pile. We've been there for two years. Was supposed to be a flip but we are falling inlove with it!!
