OMG that video is why I won't buy hatchery chicks or commercial eggs. Poor chicks, but yes very informative & thanks for posting it.
My first pet was a Silkie hen, & I can't imagine being without a Silkie. We have about a dozen now, and a half dozen "Frizkins" (Silkie/Frizzled Cochin cross-the most persistant broodies ever!)
One of the boys tried to get tough with me the other day & I just laughed at him. He may end up moving out because of it, but for now he doesn't do any damage, just grabs my pantleg & hold on, or pecks my shoe. Testosterone poisoning

That was a pretty neat video! They are much tougher than I thought. They go through alot on those conveyor belts. I'll try the feather sexing on my next hatch.

I just recently got a trio of silkies. I think they are pretty ( at least their feathers are....the roo's not that handsome in the face). My friends who raise them tell me the hens are the BEST moms and foster moms. I know someone who places eggs from other hens and even some guinea eggs under his silkie hens. She will hatch them. They are more like pets too. They are great with children ( whom I have 7 ) I have one friend who had a snake get in and devour some of his baby silkies. The mama hen would give her life before running from the snake. He had to get under her to get to them. Luckily my friend caught the snake in the process of trying to do that, before he was 'beheaded'. I have only had mine for about 2 weeks, and so far they have been a joy to watch and get to know!
