I like pine shavings as well. The course kind, not the fine shavings. I tried straw and found it to be a big mess. I put 6" of shavings on the floor and "fluff" it up with a hoe a few times a week. This helps with insulation this time of year as well as dries out the poo. Straw compacts too much and doesn't dry as well. That's my 2 cents.

I live in the Northwest where it rains like crazy. I use straw because it keeps things relatively dry. I thought about sand but straw keeps them warmer in the winter and also it encourages more things like worms and bugs for them to find. I don't clean it out a lot, just add more when it gets soggy. Didn't find it that hard to remove when the time came to shovel it out. It was work, but not horrible.
