Hello all, i have had a serious problem with snakes this year. I have lost close to 100 eggs in the past 3 months. I went about a hour after dark about a month ago and killed a 5ft+ rat snake. Thought he was a copperhead in the dark... Then i seen a water moccasin about 6ft from the coop around 5 or 6 in the evening. I have checked early morning and about a hour after dark at the latest. I am missing this other snake / snakes. Should i go check at 3am? Whats the most common time to catch one? When i get a few more bucks I'm going to get some minnow traps and try that out. (seen that here) In the past 72 hrs it has got 10 eggs. It dont like the golf balls either, seems to move them out of the way.

from Louisiana! Second I don't have a clue. I will say that the rat snake my husband found curled in the next box and the water moccasin that we found both were found in the morning! My MIL did see one in there in the evening as she was closing them up! So I'm not sure!!

There's been several threads about snakes recently. One of the popular suggestions was to twist deer netting loosely around the outside of the pen, or hang it loosely over the top. A lot of folks have trapped snakes that way.

A snake expert posted about the minnow traps - she said you don't need bait, but be sure to put them along walls, where the snakes crawl.

I lost 18 chicks to snakes, and now I put the mamma hens and chicks into a snakeproof cage every night for three weeks, until the chicks are big enough to hop up the ladder to the roost. We cover the cage with hardware cloth tied with wire. The last chicks have lasted three weeks, anyway... They went to the roost last night. I guess I'll see in a few minutes if they made it through the night.

It's been a bad year for snakes!

Some of you.... lol

I have had the worst problem ever. I found these about 3 weeks ago. I believe they were trying to breed since there were 7 of them in one water hole that was only about 4ft by 4ft
