What's the best way to quit your job? [Update, post 37]

Guess it depends on the job. For engineers, you often give a minimum 2 week notice, if not 4 week, because someone has to learn from you your part of the teams project before you leave. Sometimes 4 weeks notice isn't long enough. For the lab I am in, the two people that left gave a 10 week notice so others could pick up their work. That said, I have a few friends in retail, they just told their boss they were leaving and left. But in their jobs, anyone could learn what needed to be done from any other associate in about a day or two.

I would do it with as much grace as possible. You never know when you may need that reference and it doesn't matter if it was a super professional job or not. Sometimes people leave in a huff and it bites them in the butt later on. You seem to care and moving out of state is a good reason to quit. I would write a nice, truthful letter and hand it to the person, expressing regret if that's how you feel. Two weeks notice is ample notice, IMO.

I know that one girl got hired and about two weeks in she got a better job and gave her two weeks. My boss told her just not to come back because she didn't want to finish training her for her to just quit..

So, I'm hoping that since I'm already trained to do everything (even some of her duties that I'm not supposed to do

) that she'll let me stay and work as many hours as possible before I have to move.

If you're a valued employee, chances are she'll want you to work the two weeks, so you can train your replacement.

I run a house cleaning company, so not a great job, but really hard to find a suitable, hard worker replacement. Had a girl once give me 4 weeks notice. I took it and tried out a few people till I found one i liked. I lost money for alot of those 4 weeks. Bu the employee I chose. After having a whole four weeks to do so, is still with me, almost 6 years later!! Well worth the lost money! A smart employer will see that!

So the question is, is your employer smart? about other things?

...No... Sadly she's not.

I was talking to a couple of people at work and they told me that they would just not come back.
They think she's going to cut my hours out of spite. *sigh*
I'm just going to tell her at the end of next week.. and I'll go from there.

Even if she is spiteful and cuts your hours... you need to do the RIGHT thing and give a 2 week notice...
If she is a jerk, thats on HER, but at least YOU did the right thing...

I agree with Not-Stoopid (

)! Had that done to me once. Custom (and the law in most places where such laws exist) says that you give notice equal to one pay period, and that works both ways.

Take the high road and give the 2wks notice written and verbal. As the saying goes..don't burn any bridges, especially in todays economy. Legally, if u are past 3months, they either have to pay u severence pay or let u work. They also have to pay any PTO days. U won't be able to take any vacation days during that 2 wks.
