whats the hardiest winter breed of standard chicken?????????????

i just read the article about them on here and maybe they would do well, at least the rose combed ones.

Despite the "Ice" in Iceland, the north-central US and Canada are FAR colder than Iceland, surrounded by ocean warmed by the North Atlantic current. While cold there, they don't get the bitter continental cold of -30 like U.P. of Michigan, Maine, Minnesota and the Dakotas. Even southern Alaska is warmer than those areas.

Just looked it up

Avg. high in Iceland in January is 30 degrees F
Avg. high in Michigan/Sault Ste. Marie in January is 22 degrees F
Avg. high in Duluth, MN in January 15 degrees

Water makes a big difference

Oh, yeah maybe not then.

wat do them look like. never herd of one.

I've never heard of them either. I googled them, and it sounds like Greenfire Farms is the only one who breeds them in the US: http://greenfirefarms.com/store/category/chickens/hedemora/ They look like a real neat breed for colder climates, but check out the price tag!

Greenfire Farm and stoneunhenged are the same farm and I think you are right in that they are the only ones in the U.S. that has them.

Why are all your chickens dying? Is your coop drafty? Are they getting enough protein? Where are you located?

It's been in the single digits at night here with snow on the ground and my tiny banty is doing fine. My white leghorns with their huge combs and small bodies are doing fine. Even my little runty phoenix who decided last month to molt and is still half bald and sleeps alone is doing fine.

Did you get your birds from a Hatchery??

There is no reason why you should not have hardy birds. Seromas are not able to handle that kind of cold. They came from or a they came from Malaysia a tropical island. All are warm weather birds.

Do you know any breeders in Maine who raise chickens??? What breed do you like then find the ones that will live in your climate. thats what I would first think about.

I have friends there that have flocks that are very hardy. Aslo have friends in Vermont and New York and Rhode Island.

Look forward to where you got our birds. Your chickens have to be kept some what comfortable in your state. Its not like Washington State where I came from, but it does get cold. Look forward to your reply. bob
