whats the most annoying response you get when people find out you have chickens?

It's actually a good way to make money too. It's not a huge amount since I don't charge much and because this is my first year so I had to build the nesting boxes, roost, and run. But with 20 girls who are supposed to be excellent layers I will be making a little bit of cash. Plus I like to share.

it's a win-win situation there! I wanted one or two ended up with five. I want twenty now so I'll probably end up with a hundred of them! Chicken math my patootie! Lol but I think if I had a flock that big I would donate eggs to my local shelters :)

You know you make a very GOOD POINT. Some people are not happy and they can't stand it when other people are, don't let them bubble bust your joy!!

Your hens are super lucky to be spoiled so much, I better go clean my coop tomorrow !!! Just keep checking in with all the chicken people here for support. When are your hens expected to lay eggs? Mine are around October, I'll be so excited I won't know what to do!

I know exactly how you feel! I have Standard size Modern Games and a lot of people ask if they are fighting birds. OF COURSE NOT! :barnie  In fact, my Modern bantams are my tamest birds. I love my Moderns, and that is the worst thing that I could imagine happening to them. :hit
I'm not too keen on the moderns but if they are like my Americans it's a sight to see when a hen has her clutch of chicks. They are the best of the best at motherhood and nothing is getting close to her babies!

I hadn't thought of donating some eggs but now that you mention it, it sounds like a great idea!

My girls are expected to lay in october too! In October they will be 20 weeks, but I hope they will lay sooner!

Whoops I just joined BYC a few days ago so I made a mistake on that post, the last sentence of Brandichick's post is part of my reply

If it makes you happy, who cares? I get mixed reviews about keeping a rather large flock. "Don't they smell bad"? "Aren't they a lot of work"? Aren't they expensive"? "Ohh, you're gonna get salmonella"! Whatever, I like them!
Then those nay sayers come over for a visit, end up in my coop and fall in love. I raise Silkies and Sizzles, so it always starts "What are those weird looking things"? Then they get a feather pile at their feet and "Oh my gosh, they're adorable, do you sell them"? Why yes, yes I do!

Enjoy your birds, continue to be happy and sneer when those nasty folks ask you for some eggs!

Hey jgoodin, I get it too. I'm in el paso as well. Lower valley to be exact. I don't care anymore I love my birds. They are fun and funny. I call myself the crazy chicken lady.

I imagine it'll add just a tad more personal satisfaction! My father in law told me the local shelters probably wouldn't take my eggs unless I had some sort of licensing :-(
