Wow that's a little harsh.

I name my flock roosters but still have the gumption to eat them when the time comes. The hens don't get names (except for Castro's sister who went into the stew pot recently.)

I named the roosters because the first one I got was my son's pet and the only chicken I owed. We've since eaten him. The second rooster came with a name, a salmon faverolle named Jed so that one stuck. I just got a new ss rooster yesterday and when my 3 yo decides on a name that is what we will call him. If that is nonsense, addled, or bird-brained so be it. My kids like it and that is all that matters.

BR Roo - Gabriel
BR Hens - Mabel, Ethel, Gertie
BO Hens - Buffy, Sally, Cookie
RIR Hens - Myrtle, Jenny, Penny

all my roos are called meat...all my hens are called eggs;then later on they're called soup or chicken and dumplins. Naming chickens is sheer nonsense! Must be addled and bird-brained?

This was more than just a little harsh. It was insensitive and shows ignorance. Dogs and cats are used as food, also. Care to insult every dog or cat owner who provides them with a name. In many families chickens are a family pet who also provide a service. Mine is one of those. This was a fun, happy thread. There was no reason to come in and insult every poster prior to you.

The rules for Chicken Chariot Racing are quite specific...

3b) All entries & chickens are required to have a name. The team name & chicken name must be distinct. In order for the announcer to call the race, he must be aware of the individual names of the birds & teams.

Also it would look kind of stupid at kite festivals not to have a name for the invited performer. The press loves to make a big deal of reporting that "Miss Ohio" will be flying a kite at an upcoming show.

I guess some of us more talented folks can see beyond the "meat & eggs" potential of our feathered PETS.

This has been fun. I love reading the fdifferent names. I have 16 total, 12 hens and 4 roos.( yes I know I don't need that many, just haven't decided who to get rid of yet) Some of these have names and some don't. Here goes...
Buffy- BO, Claude - OEG ( Buffy's significant other), the other 2 BO's are simply "the buffs", Ruth -RIR( she is currently sitting on 14 eggs, hatch date april 19), 3 BR's, 4 Black Australorps- the black's, LulaBelle( I have no idea what she is), Josie- HE looked just like LulaBelle then he started crowing, now he is as big as, Dom- roo # 3( part Dominiquer<sp?>), final roo is Handsome Jack- Jack is a cross between Claude and Buffy, he has his Daddy's beautiful orange, red and green coloring , but mama's build. He was hatched in the bator, and just as stubborn as Daddy. He loves to roost outside the coop in the shed rafters. He will ride on my arm when I put him up for the night. Claude came home with us because he was being picked on by the other roos, now he rules the roost even though Dom and Josie are 2-3 times his size.

I have Spanky. Gin (well, "Ginger" but he turned out to be a boy), and Bo-Peep. We had a Lucy, and a few more hens, but they were killed before we could build our coop

We're getting more hens this spring/summer, so I will probably come back and add to this list.
