Whats the point of piegons?

I enjoy watching them & they are peaceful in groups. I started with few pair & just kept adding to them. I kept my pigeons in with my chickens and peafowl for the last few years. This worked out fine with the adults, HOWEVER, chickens and especially peafowl will kill the young if they get a chance.

I love my peafowl but they are brutal on chicks. They are the first to notice anything new in the area and will harass it. I've never had them kill or injure an adult chicken or pigeon but their beaks pack a powerful punch that a young bird can't withstand.

I finally got my pigeon coop and run set up this spring and the pigeons are hatching out squab like crazy. I do have 2 silkie roos hanging out with the pigeons and they don't touch the babies at all even though there are a few pair that decided to nest on the floor of the coop.

I started with 3 breeding pairs of Racing Homers last year. I'm up to 30 flyers & 2 chicks. I can watch them fly for hours!

I did get my 8 for dog training. I love them though. They are more fun than the dog. I let all 8 go at once and watch till they are out of sight. they are so much fun around the house too. They are trainable. Peaceful. I got racing homers and am pretty sure now that I am going to get into racing.

yep... similar diseases, mites, lice, worms... same treatment, so if you already have chooks, might as well have pigeons

There is always a ton of pigeons at the poultry auction that I take my excess birds to.....I only sell there tho I never bring any birds home because I'm so paranoid about bringing some disease home. I was afraid that would be the answer....thanks.
