Thunderstorm asthma warning for north central Victoria, Gippsland regions

Victorians have been warned to close their doors and windows immediately as a possible thunderstorm asthma weather event approaches.

An urgent epidemic thunderstorm asthma warning has been issued for people in North Central and West and South Gippsland forecast districts.

Victoria's chief health officer Clare Looker said the combination of high pollen levels and a certain type of thunderstorm with strong wind gusts was the reason behind the warning.

Thunderstorm asthma occurs when grass pollen grains get swept up in the wind and carried for long distances.

Some grains can burst open and release tiny particles that are concentrated in the wind gusts that come just before a thunderstorm.

These particles are small enough to be breathed deep into the lungs and can rapidly trigger asthma symptoms, making it difficult to breathe.

Melbourne experienced the world's largest epidemic thunderstorm asthma event in November 2016, with thousands of people developing breathing difficulties in the space of a few hours.

What to do

People with asthma and spring hay fever are at an increased risk of an attack and are advised to avoid any wind gusts where possible.

You can do this by going inside and closing any windows and doors and turning off air conditioners that bring in air from the outside.

It is important to ensure this is done before the strong wind gusts hit.

People with asthma are also advised to have their reliever medication with them at all times today and review their asthma action plan.

Those with spring hay fever should take a moment to familiarise themselves with asthma first aid and have an asthma reliever on hand.

Dr Looker said anyone who felt unwell could contact "Nurse on Call" on 1300 60 60 24, visit the Victorian Virtual Emergency Department, or see their local doctor.

If someone stops breathing, if their asthma suddenly becomes worse, or if a person is having an asthma attack and a reliever puffer is not available, call triple-0 immediately.

Trains cut, power out as storms sweep through Melbourne,Geelong region

Multiple small storms cells moved swept across Melbourne just before 4pm on Wednesday.

The Bureau of Meteorology issued a severe thunderstorm warning for damaging winds, large hailstones and heavy rainfall, with the risk of flash flooding around the CBD, along with areas to the south of the Brisbane Ranges, Portarlington and waters off Queenscliff.

A 106km/h wind gust was recorded at Fawkner Beacon in Port Phillip.

The weather bureau said 43 millimetres of rain was recorded in half an hour at Clayton, in Melbourne's south-east, and 38.8 mm at Oakleigh South.

A fallen tree branch suspended train services between Elsternwick and Sandringham, while trains on the Mernda line could not stop at Regent station due to storm damage.
