I was raised in Sioux Falls and much of my family is still there. After I married Ken we spent the next 26 years as a Navy family. We retired back to SF but Ken missed his mountains. He's Wyoming born and raised. Well, I figured that for 26 years I'd packed up so I could be with him and why should retirement be any different? We get back a few times a year, the last time for my granddaughter's wedding in September.

When I saw your post about your great-grandfather's statue the first thought that popped into my head was, "So, your great-great grandfather was David?" But I didn't think you'd appreciate the humor so I refrained. See how well I refrained?

Anyway, when you get a chance head out and have some chislic and that ice cold beer for me.....I make it here at home but it doesn't taste as good as when I'm gathered with all of my sisters, my brother, and their kids and my granddaughter! It's my very favorite snack, except that I can make an entire meal out of it! The only time I have a beer is if there's a plate full of chislic!

Edited to add: We used to catch some fast moving catfish in that river at the Falls, too, and Northerns. I hate Northerns! It always surprises folks we take back there with us that the Falls are smack dab in the middle of such a big city. And I loved going there during the melt - the Falls were so incredibly powerful then!

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHa.......Ah David David David, what a scandal he was for the town of Sioux falls, and what an excellent male anatomy lesson for girls! We spent hours staring at that statue with old ladies tsking at us and telling us to stop looking or we will go to hell.....

I have not had chislic in forever. I think I better make some soon! Wow memory lane.............

You know, I actually live in Spokane, WA now and this city has the same unique river and falls feature as Sioux falls. Like your husband, I had to have mountains. I love it here. I live on Mount Spokane!

Hi hennible ..i enjoyed you story and think that this is a neat idea for a thread. My name just reflects my home state and a feather for chickens, ( my creative juices were low that day i guess. We have a Indiana byc thread and a sweet lady from there made my avatar ( thanks Mother2hens) the avatar with RIR and the state map

My user name is chickwhispers because the first summer I had chicks I would talk to them and they would follow me. I would whistle for the cats and the chicks would come. DSO called me the chickwhisperer but that name was already taken, so it got shortened.

My avatar is changed out a few times a year usually to one or two of my hens and I have started to make a Welcome out of them for any newbies who might see it.

Chislic is a dish so regional to Eastern South Dakota that if you cross the Missouri River (or "head West River", as we call it) they don't even know what it is. It's small cubes of meat - mutton, beef, or venison - skewered, dropped in hot fat and fast fried, then sprinkled liberally with either coarse salt or garlic salt. That's it...simple as that. My preference is venison and coarse salt. It's so common in the Sioux Falls area that some restaurants serve it. It's also a favorite at the State Fair in Huron. We even used to be able to get it at Dairy Queen! No cholesterol and sodium counting allowed! There used to be movie theater in Sioux Falls that had tables and chairs instead of movie theater seats and you could sit at a table, order chislic and beer or burgers or whatever, a cold beer, and watch a movie. Boy, I can't remember what the name of that place was but it was always packed.

Oh, yeah!

It's close! The secret to the best chislic is making sure it's not overdone and then the seasoning put on it right as the meat comes out of the fryer. I like VISIBLE sprinkling of coarse salt on mine. I skip all of the other junk.

Um, not quite twins. That blonde hair you were talking about in an earlier post used to be red...yep, I was a redhead. Now it's silver. And I earned every single silver hair up there too!
