What's wrong with my chick?

Hey Chickenlover334

Do you have older chickens? Or have you ever had the opportunity to put your hand under a chicken on the nest or between two chickens on the roost. You will be surprised how warm it gets. That amount of warmth is what young chicks need and the reason the mother hens sits on them and why they snuggle under her.

Chicks on their own, even snuggling, do not have the feathers etc to keep each other warm.

You need to create an environment with temperatures similar to that of a mother hen and a blanket is not going to cut it.

If chicks do not require heat from their mother, birds everywhere are doing it wrong. You are a proxy parent for these little ones and you need to give them a heat source to ensure their survival.

Where did you get them from? I would like to venture a guess that if from a store or in a breeder's brooder, they would have had a heat source.

Is there any chance that your chicks have a heat lamp now? It's been a little bit cold around where I live... Don't want to freeze those chicks!

:hugs I'm so sorry for you loss! That is the worst! She is in chick heaven now with all the mealworms she can eat! :) You may want to pick up a heating lamp for your other two soon, if you have not already. :jumpy

Thank you for saying something,:hugsI'm sure that if you get some chicks they will live longer than peep,me and my brother barried her today in loving memory of peep i named her that because she was the loudest.my chicks are to young to live outside so they live in a box in my house and I don't have a lamp but I will soon, thanks for saying something:confused:g:highfive:

My chick falls asleep really fast and she sleeps mostly in a corner and all day, what's wrong with her.is she sick.is this something all baby's do.im really worried this is my first chick and I don't want her to go.there is so many questions.

If I hold her she sleeps in my hand and if she is sleeping on my leg she stays balled up in between my arm and side.when she sleeps her beak moves by Itself, she isn't chirping as much and she has other chicks living with her, could this be them.if you need to know this she is a black puller.

Luckily she can keep her balance but is very still and is careless of how I move her what do I do please help me and my poor chicken.she also sleeps in the water bowl and I haven't seen her eat or sleep but the main question is,is my little baby sick,or is she dying.

Will she be perfectly fine or am I over reacting because she is my first chick.pleaseeeeee help.:(:(:(:(

Turns out she was dying because she died yesterday March 1
Rest in peace my little chick:hit :hit

You are very welcome. I have not gotten my first chicks yet, but they are scheduled to be here in April! We live and learn from our mistakes, and that is okay. :) love the name peep! I'm sure she loved being with you. She is probably peeping down at you right now! ;)

Hello...Baby chicks definitely need an external heat source. On the top of your cardboard box mount one of those shiny aluminum light fixtures that have a clamp attached. Make sure it's secure by jury rigging or whatever! Use a 75 watt bulb and check, somehow, the temp at the bottom of the box. If it's too hot they will move away. If it's too cool, they will huddle right under it. Needs to be mid 90s temp.
Best wishes ..

You can use even a incandescent bulb in a desk lamp, make sure it's not a LED bulb, those do not put off enough heat. I use the equivalent of 28watts in my small brooders and the chicks do great with it.
