I noticed that my favorite leghorn hen, Peggy, was looking pretty larthargic out in the run when i went outside about 30 mins ago. I immediately went in and picked her up..she didnt even run or fight with me, normally she is spastic.

i got her set up in a carrier/crate off away from the other birds. gave her her own food, water, light and all that. she still seems pretty lethargic..i cant think of a better word

her eyes are clear, comb is still nice & red...was a little cold when i first picked her up though. she seems to want to just sit down, she got up and moved once since i put her in the crate. she's not even holding her tail erect. i cant find any injuries on her but she does feel a little thin...and also i did not get an egg today.

what could be wrong with her?
I really can't do the "sick chicken" thing again..

ANYONE ELSE???

i looked up some stuff on eggbound on here...her vent looks a little loose maybe, but isnt red or anything, shes not swollen back there or on her underside. it was kind of hot today though.

any ideas of what it might be??

There are a number of possibilities. Eggbound is still possible, an egg could have broken inside her, she could have a soft shell egg stuck, she could have become an internal layer, there could be a tumor in her, she could be sick with worms or mites/lice, she could have eaten something she should not have... and probably about 10 other things. Including nothing much at all; maybe she got a little warm and dehydrated. She could even be going broody. Although that is very unusual for leghorns, it is always possible. No one is going to be able to tell you for sure over the web.

wow...she looks bad, poor little girl..

eggbound is when they have an egg stuck, and are having a problem expelling it.
check the vent for drainage ..also for pulsing.
some people put the hen in a dim quiet place on a warmed towel or some sort of heat pad, or bag..
or..set her in a sink of warm water.
this is to try and help her relax the muscles to expel the egg.
being eggbound is a very serious, even critical problem..

has this hen ever laid very large eggs, or soft shelled eggs?

describe her droppings..color and consistency. IN DETAIL PLEASE
has she ever been wormed?

what all do you feed?

check the crop..
do you know how to do that?
is she having any wheezing or other breath sounds?

important you answer the questions.
fingers crossed for the hen.

I am not sure. I have a white Leghorn myself about the same age as yours and when i red your post it made me feel bad that your leghorn was not her self so i wanted to say that i hope she gets better soon. I will keep my fingers crossed for you.

My Leghorn's comb is floppy and she has black marks on it as well. I am pretty sure that it's normal. I have seen other Legorns like that to.
