whats wrong with my hen? *video* unbalanced...NEW VIDEO~post#385

All I can suggest is to be patient and let the vitamin B works its "magic." I was just so thankful for each day I had with Baby. When he started sleeping in the pen in his box I could hardly sleep not knowing how he was doing. Each morning when Id go to open up the pen and Id see his little head pop up from the box, my heart would skip a beat. I knew I had yet one more day with him.

When my hen, Paula, had this problem I found something that seemed to encourage her to eat. Once she was able to hold her head & neck up, I took her outside & held her with her feet on the ground. I sprinkled a little chick starter & scratch on the ground & she went to town pecking away (I held her up the whole time)! While she was inside in a box, she never showed that much interest in food in a bowl & I had to feed her very soupy mash from a spoon. After taking her outside she seemed to get better quicker. She enjoyed being outside in the sunshine & she could hear her buddies over in the coop. It's like she got her "will to live" back.
Just an idea!
I am now dealing with my roo, Jake, having the same problem. He is on intensive vit B & E "therapy" right now. I will post any updates or changes.
Best of luck to everyone dealing with this mystery thing-a-ma-jig!

Hi Robin and Everyone, Here are some pics I snapped of Pumpkin tonight. Any ideas?

Again, she's eating great with all her vitamins and drinking great. Bright as a button , eyes are just fine. Doesn't seem confused and she "hits the mark" of where she's pecking. Nothing with her skin. Neck and wings are not affected. Nothing else present in the rest of the flock.

Below: Pumpkin standing 1/2 way up. Sturdy, strong, and looking at the camera. But notice how she is coming up from having her head and torse pointed down at the ground. She's not in the typical "standing tall" stance of a chicken.

Below: Pumpkin has walked over to her waterer without problem. Notice is gait is still more down toward the ground.

Below: Pumpkin has tried to stand up "straight" and begins to topple backward.

Oh, Robin - she will stand in that same way on her legs as in the video of "Baby doing much better" in order to have the rest of her body in a "normal" position.

Pam

Yes, its a balance problem. Same as Baby had. You saw in the video he balanced best on his haunches and when he tried to walk he had to use his wings to propel himself. His little legs were just out of whack but he eventually got better. Give her a chance on the vitamin B. I wish I knew more to suggest but I think it will just take time. For everyone with birds having similar issues, keep in mind that if the bird has been sitting and not moving a lot for an extended period of time, their legs will weaken. It will take time for them to regain their "sea-legs" so to speak. Once Baby began to improve, it still took a least a week for his complete recovery. I was noticing tonight that he still is a little shaky in the legs sometime. Think of humans recovering from temporary paralysis or immobilization, it takes a long time to get back to "normal."

@Robin
We're gonna hang in there. She certainly is no worse and actually seems sturdier.
I know everyone who's going through this is very thankful for you constant input.

Pam

lobzi,i took your advice and held queeny up to make it seem like shes standing up.she ate about 1 1/2 tbsp. of her egg yolk.she seems to still have alot of strength in her right leg.its the left thats messed up,so she leans to the right all the time.if she falls over she cant get back up on her own.she started to get a bruising look around her eyes and im afraid she may be getting anemic.i try to get a few cc of crushed vit. b in water down her throat, but i dont know if its enough.she really fights me on the forced medicating...

update: I have been giving the vitamin B to her since yesterday. I put it in her food and water. She is scarfing it down, and I didn't think she was ever going to stop drinking it today. I know she is getting enough in her. I hope the vitamin B works. Everytime I pick her up, she flaps her wings nonstop until I put my arm over them, so im glad they are strong. When I put her on the ground, she falls either to the right or on her face. When she walks, she uses her wings to balance and if she wants to go a far distance, she will run on the tip of her feet while flapping her wings. I worried she is going to hurt herself trying to walk. Im so glad she is eating and drinking still. She hasn't improved yet, but it's only been two days. I sure hope this vitamin B is going to work, or else im not sure what Im going to do. I will keep everyone updated. Thanks for everyone's help so far! :)
