Yeah I messed up a hatching batch of Peeps hard feathered chocolates - was waiting for more of her hens to be laying again so I can get a full dozen+. Offering them in combination with her blacks is a great idea for those that need black Am for SOP work. I wanted, and have, different SQ AM lines to outcross and improve both choc projects (hard feathered and silkied) so I just didn't need the black all ready in Peeps lines - a big picture genetic diversity decision made and frankly, rather have more choc choices (and hopefully more choc boys) to work from. Choc boys are the plum and I'm greedy - like choices and backups and was going to do both non-silkied hard featherd and silkied choc/mauve projects. Could use the choc boys to take into the silkied project and with SQ SOP hens either project for guarenteed split males and some choc females.I'm going to also work on the chocolate silkied AM, I'm hatching out two sets from pips and peeps. I also have a red leakage in my splash. You can see it in my pictures on the page before.
Anyway, as fate and fortune smiled - I now have a small adult flock of Chookschicks choc/mauve silkied project, plus a good number of juvies and chicks!

Peeps position (as I understand it) in staying clear of silkieds drop-dead-itus is valid. There is still some fragility to them, tho this is becoming far less frequent an issue with progressively increasing genetic diversity from generation to generation going forward. But awareness just further solidifies the outcrossing decision choices made.
Needless to say, I'm interested in the idea of the calico, even have one, just havent' had the time to get into what the deal is. Maybe time for it's own color project thread?
