What's wrong with their feathers?

You are right! There is always room for improvement. I have some Ameracaunas from a well known line and I was very disappointed
in the first few months. They had no muffs or beards! But slowly they came in and now they are as full and pretty as can be.

Ok, here's an update for everyone! I have 9 of these eggies in my bator. They are on day 5. It looks as if 7/9 have viable embryos and the other 2 have blood rings, which means ALL of them were fertile. The air cells are a little "floppy" from going through the PO, but I've had plenty of chicks hatch just fine with weird air cells. Cross your fingers!

for you.

We were planning on breeding and selecting for Am standards except for the feathering of course. May be a long road, who knows, but we've got the time.

I think these birds are beautiful. I also can see what Cottagegarden is saying. Just like with any Ameraucana line or Silkie line or whatever, you have to cull birds with unwanted characteristics to get the line to breed true and to make them better than the previous generation. I believe this isn't just a mutation. I think the birds shown in your second generation are showing more Silkie characteristics then the parents, so no doubt there was a Silkie in the ancestry. No huge deal, they aren't pure Ameraucana, but outcrosses occur all the time though to get new colors and patterns into the breed, and all ameraucanas were breed up from EE's waaay back when to start with. Bringing in other genes from an outside breed isn't unheard of, but to make things clear I'd call these EE's or Ameraucana project birds if you're going to keep the project going, as to not ruffle any feathers, and just to be correct. Just be sure to keep breeding and culling these until they breed true for many generations. I'd love to get some, and did contact you about them a little while back, but have so many other projects going right now. I just can't spare any incubator space at the moment. Maybe before the year is up, if they're still laying. They really are cutie pies!

Isn't that the truth! I don't understand it either.

Yea, I'm confused. I'm not referring to any certain person or situation, just that it might cause problems to confuse these with pure or true Ameraucanas at this early stage. Most Ameraucana breeders are very serious and work hard to have quality stock that breeds true. These are cool birds, pretty and very fun, but not near that point yet.

Edited to add... Heck, half of mine aren't to that point either!

I do understand upset at hatcheries and breeders who intentionally misrepresent. Then it's completely justified.

It's beyond that, that I don't understand. Anything online I try to remember you're not getting tone, so might be misreading.
