What's wrong with their feathers?

Well these pictures really don't flatter the chicks much but it is what I was able to get today. It is cloudy, and windy and a bit cold. They did not like the flash of the camera and wouldn't turn around to pose. When the weather is nice I will get better ones. Any guesses as to boys or girls? I was thinking the slower feathering chicks were boys but one of them has a comb that looks more on the feminine side.

This first one is of a well feathered chick

This is one of the "stringy chicks"

I still think they are beautiful, just different. The softer feathers are coming in as you can see on their chests.

This one insisted on having a bad hair day.

LOL you go right ahead! I was getting frustrated with all of them because they would not turn around for me or stay in the light. And Bart my Black Ameracauna Roo was keeping a very close eye on me.

He hasn't even gotten aggressive but I didn't feel like making him decide that today was the day to start.

So Alice, are your stringy ones like those two? Honestly I am not sure I got pics of both stringy's as they were crowding in with all the other babies to hide from me.

My stringy one has the same type of comb as your first images. It hates being held or photographed and is smaller than all the other chicks that hatched with it. Screams bloody murder in fact.

How are the wing feathers on your fluffier ones? Do they have 'chunks' of normal feathering or are they fluffy the whole way through?

I just moved them from one secure brooder to a secure coop (predator issues) and the brooder was not people friendly. So... I don't really know.

When I managed to crawl into the brooder and catch the chicks I got out ASAP and didn't even take a look at them other than to get them into the other pen.

The last time I looked though (a few weeks ago) they did have hard and soft mixed together.

My chicks don't really like to be held either but I haven't made alot of effort to get them to. I let them live their chicken life and just sit back and enjoy.

I must have gotten pics of both of the harder feathered chicks because the beaks are different. A couple of the chicks have very downward pointy beaks. Like birds of prey.

I wonder if yours is a girl? The first ropey chicks comb looks rooish to me.

I just found this thread and had to let you know how beautiful your chickens are!

Wow! I am truly amazed at this new cross. I haven't read all the way through this thread yet, are you still selling the eggs from these amazing chickens? If you are, is there any way possible for me to get some, and how would I go about doing that? Thank you for introducing your beautiful chickens to the world!

Editing now that I have read the entire link- wow what a brain surge so much information! What amazing people you all are for your efforts in strengthening and growing this breed. I see your hens are not currently laying and there is a very long list of people waiting for eggs but if its at all possible, I would like to be added to the bottom of the list, even if it takes a year or more for my turn. This has been such an interesting thread to read and I will definitely follow it to keep up with the progress made. I am very interested in seeing what comes of the silky Ameracaunas being bred with the Black ameracaunas. I hope the fake egg trick gets your hens back into laying soon. Best of luck to you!

Great pictures Germaine! I really see the difference you are talking about in the feathers. Some look really softer or smoother than the others. Mine all look the same, I believe. They sure are growing! I can hardly wait to start the next generation!

Hey all,

I was just wondering if anyone has tried to cross a Black Ameracauna roo? (Sorry not enough time to go through all the pages to see.) I think these birds have very unique feathers!!! Congratulations to the person who preserved these, type of feather pattern, diverse Ameracaunas because from here the skies the limit in my book.

They remind me of Dalmatians!
