Raccoon attack. :( Or other predators are also possible.

I had a duck get scalped by a coon much worse than that and survive with her own body taking care of it.

I also had a broody chick get scalped by a hawk and thrive.

Without knowing what time the attack took place and that kind of stuff maybe hard to discern exact predator. Owls another possibility. There may be more with scalping M.O. Living in the wild is risky business... it's eat or be eaten. :hmm

Looks kinda fresh still and pink. It will scab up. And hopefully he will recover nicely as mine did. Getting past shock is the hard part, looks like it's got a friend for support. :fl

Could have been bitten by a snapping turtle while it's head was underwater... Maybe you can harvest some of those evil turtles and turn them into soup? It looks bad, but I think the goose will recover as injury seems superficial...

Yea I was figuring that it had to be a predator. And I found out that he's a gosling so that's even worse. I wonder how they react when this happens! It's gotta hurt!

Yes, I'm sure it did, but he will most likely survive it and hopefully have learned to watch out for whatever did it... They are beautiful birds! Not endangered though, so pretty much on their own when it comes to survival...

I was saying the same thing, about the snapping turtle! It seems to be a lot in that one lake because a lot of the have chopped up webbed feet.. but how can u get rid of them turtles? And hopefully he does survive it because u would think that would cause an infection of some sort.. hmmm

Mine that got scalped was a duckling also.

While infections can happen... fact is the body is this amazing (science reality) self healing vessel that produces it's own antibodies! :celebrate

If people were less in a hurry to assume no one can heal without antibiotic help... we wouldn't have so many resistant strains of bacteria.

It's quite amazing to see how fast they heal too! Your pic looked like the gosling was in good spirits... getting past shock is the hard part to me. I believe whole heartedly that bird can recover. :fl Maybe you will be able to update progress pics?

Snapping turtles... part of nature. People don't realize often just how brutal nature really is. I wonder what eats the snapping turtles? :hmm

People put out bait to catch snapping turtle. They are awful predators to water fowl. Hope the gosling makes it waterfowl have a body temperature around 107 they can fight off infection pretty well worst that can happen is fly strike.

At their own ponds, I think... not sure it's legal in public places.

They don't have many predators as adults... https://www.google.com/search?q=snapping+turtle+predators&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&client=firefox-b-1 except for people... https://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/turtle-soup-recipe2-1943824 I understand it is very good... So good, that in the US the turtles are hard to find and in some states protected... http://www.slate.com/blogs/wild_thi...te_too_many_turtles.html#lf_comment=438046538 but you live in Canada! (So enjoy!)
Ah, I remember making sure to avoid the turtles when we saw them at the river... when I lived in central CA... don't know if they were the same... but we knew they bite!

I'm not sure if they OP is in Canada... or just a Canadian geese lover. :p Putting it in the profile can help answer questions without having to be asked. ;)
