What's your favorite horse breed(s), and why? 😁

Connemara Pony or Paso Fino. I like my horses short and surefooted.

that would be my black and white paint Arabian/Quarter horse mix, the TB is too bouncy for my taste (and lower back) lol...thats why I'd rather ride the glide!

I haven't been able to ride since 2012, when not one but both hips started locking. Ive learned much since then. I have become a little more flexible but haven't had a chance to experiment.

If I could try, id like a gaited horse, maybe mixed w/ draft. To have substance & frame to carry my still too large of frame.

Other than that, I LOVE small ponies!! 40" (10 hh) in height or so... I am no longer breeding American Shetlands. I probably will not return to purebred of any breed, as I've been very unhappy as so many have lost the substance to be "stayers" & "workers". My last several, some of whom I'd bred, become beautiful but had lost the foundation that I had wanted to maintain.

Currently i have no equine. Just a lot of harness to fit small ponies, saddles to fit ponies & horses & bridles w/ bits to fit both ponies & horses. Smallest bit w/ 3-3/4" mouthpiece, widest just 5".

We had both 14.3 hh Arabs & 10hh Shetlands that wore a 4" bit. I made (& can still make) a lot of my own equipment - string becomes halters, leads, bridles (even bits) & harness. Broken leather becomes halters & leads, girth billets or headstalls. Legwraps, sheets, saddlepads, some riding clothes from various materials.




Same child - years apart. Skye is oldest.






I have more. I also was able to get the oldest website up & running. It details the ponies from 2009 to 2020. The last 3 passed in 2023, I had sold 5 (4 of which still live 2 miles from us). The Arabs & first foals were covered in a previous website that I have, but it's locked in computer lingo that I haven't been able to dechiper. Some of the pics on that site, im pretty sure I no longer have anywhere...

This site was down in 2020. I don't have it up to date yet w/ who sold or passed. Ive only just gotten it back up.

thank you for the pictures, and very interesting stories you were very much invested in this culture back then. I particularly enjoyed the pictures were the children were interacting and helping out with the ponies....what memories they made!....beautiful

I "went against the grain" w/ both Shetlands & Arabians. It was constant - from the open shows here in NC to even breed shows with both breeds. It always seemed we were facing "flack".

But you are right. I did enjoy the equine we owned, brought our 3 girls up riding & have tons of memories.

I had my boys and niece in 4-H and FFA, the late nights, the projects, the trips, the shows, the fairs from Miami up to Georgia, trips to Tennessee to pick up spring lambs and steers, and all the other critters and cages, kept them busy, they worked hard, they learned life skills, and we made memories and friends along the way, oh yes and the horses...condensed....thats my story...lol

My favorite breed is "Rescue!" My heart horse was a big, gangly 2 y/o blue roan appaloosa I bought "cheap" from a man who had to take him if he wanted the horse trailer he was living in. My heart went out to him and he gave me his in return ... and it was huge! He was my Best Friend for 29 years!
DD's first horse was a kill pen pull. Joey was a retired polo pony whose legs could no longer take the strain of play - and also a blue roan appy. We don't know how old he was when we rescued him, worn-out and lame, from a lesson barn, but he was definitely older than the 13 we were told. Many, many years later, the vet claims Joey is "pushing forty!" He's fully retired with a friend's ancient saddle pets.
