What's your favorite layer?

Love my black aussies too. And they are the quietest of all and are very sweet-natured and productive. The absolute gentlest of all chooks I have seen. One will come when I am doing chicken TV and get into my lap for a nap. The other breeds want to sit on my arms and shoulders and tell me all about their day.

I also would recommend golden comet or golden sex link. Not as affectionate or quiet, but bonafide egg laying machines.

Yup! I agree... Black Australorps--- they have really won my heart--- love my EE's too.

Black Aussies ROCK! They are so pretty and no picture really does them justice. The Blue/green in there feathers is breathtaking, and they lay like crazy. Mother used to lay HUGE eggs every day, until she became a mother, never been the same since.

Our girls are over two years old and still goin strong!

I love our BRs as well, but my next faves are the Black Australorps. They are dependable layers & their feathers are just gorgeous when the sun hits them. I don't know if you live in a cold climate, but I do in Indiana. They have done great this Winter! They seem unfazed by the cold and I will often see them both outside while the others stay in the coop

If you want eggs then get Gold Comets. They are the best layers of large brown eggs you can get. Also known as Red Sex Links, Cinnimon Queens, Red Stars, etc. they are a really good hen for laying. And they are hardy and very people friendly. They don't get broody, which may or may not be a consideration. We get an average of 18 eggs a day from our flock of 19 GC's even in the winter. Now I also understand that the Black Sex Links and Australorps are great layers too, but for my money, get the Gold Comets. Here's one of ours:

My experience is limited, but my Barred Rock is the friendliest of birds. She was jumping up on my arm to perch when she was quite small, and has remained calm into maturity. All of the others needed to be intensionally tamed, but not her. Also, she lays like a little machine, giving me at least 5 eggs a week, and. . . she is beautiful!

You might want to try Babcock white leghorns and brown leghorns if you're going for production. They're skittish, but consistantly lay large white eggs and are ecomomical to feed.
