Whats your thoughts on pushy sellers?

But then you put the issue on the seller...McD's can always get rid of fries by just trashing them. The same can be done with the seller. Why should the seller lose money on unwanted roosters when you can keep the hens and off the roosters....Simple. They are trying to get their birds out there into the poultry population. The best way to do that? Sell in pairs to propagate his/her lines.

Trash them or butcher and freeze but some people don't want to breed or don't know how and some don't want to butcher or know how but still want eggs should not be forced to take an animal they don't need or want in order to buy something they do need or want. Its part of the deal of breeding and selling that your gonna get certain, breed, sex, color, whathaveyou that people don't want....not the buyers problem to get rid of all the unwanted animals the seller has for whatever reason they have them for. Maybe take them to a livestock auction.

Do you really want that unwanted rooster punted out the car door a mile down the road from the swap? I am amazed at the numbers of "lost" chickens that are found around here. They are always roosters.

My decision has turned out to be... I brought you into this world, I better be responsible and take you out in the least stressful way possible. And, yes it bums me out.

I do not FORCE anyone to buy my chickens. I offer them up for sale in a configuration that works for me. While I realize that most people don't want roosters, I am as attached to the boys I hatch and raise as I am to the girls. Truthfully, as roosters seem to have more personality early on, I generally am MORE attached to the boys. I don't want them to be eaten if I can help it. I want to give them a chance to be head rooster of their own little flock. The best way to ensure this is to offer them as part of a pair or a trio. If someone does not want my roosters than I am happy to sell them elsewhere. I have never had any trouble finding happy new homes for my pairs. My extra pullets go to homes where I have previously sold them a rooster. That way I know the home is a lasting home, the people have experience with chickens and they are pretty attached to their chickens as well.

When you say roosters are my responsibility as the breeder, I agree. I choose to see mine into homes and not to the dinner table if possible. It is my right to sell them only as pairs. If a buyer does not like this arrangement they are welcome to purchase from other sellers. My farm is not Burger King- you cannot have it your way.

I just prefer keeping my customers happy. I don't think its my buyers problem if I have unwanted roosters. And by pairing up birds to where they would have to buy a bird they don't want in order to buy a bird they DO want doesnt make sense to me. If someone is going to give me some of their very hard earned money, then I will give them exactly what they want. My customers don't want to propogate lines, they want laying hens. And thats what they get. And they always come back to buy more, because they are very satisfied and happy. It makes me happy when they are happy.

But different strokes for different folks; its what makes the world go round.

I agree with Halo. In business you need to know who your customers are. Are your customers breeders? Hobbyists? If your customers tend to be backyard hobbyists who wants pullets and have no interest in roosters, it doesn't sound like an arrangement that will work out well for either party.

I wouldn't buy from someone who made the purchase of a rooster a condition of the sale. Trios are a traditional ways to start a flock and show your breeding lines. Pairs are not. I would buy a trio, I wouldn't buy a pair. A pair sounds like passing the buck to me.

I know you can't be serious. Although this is funny, the joke will be on you around here. Are folks really that naive in your area? The first customer that you try to make leave, I can assure you, you will be leaving, immediately! I can't believe that you would actually try to waste someone's time simply because they want to package their birds(or anything else)different than you are wanting to purchase them. Until the money is in my hand customer #2 has just as much right to purchase as you do. I hold nothing for no one. I've arrived at a sellers property as customer #2 and left with the merchandise simply because buyer #1 wanted to hee-haw around. While buyer#1 was hollering "I was here first", I was putting cash into the sellers hand...lol. This has happened more than once.

joebryant, I agree! I guess I would be considered pushy also because I when I sell pullets, I set a minimum of 3. I also will not sell chicks at Easter or Christmas.
