What are you using for your growing medium? Baby blanket/cocoa mat?

I was considering doing something like this myself but I was concerned over how long the blades of grass were. They'll swallow them whole and I'm somewhat paranoid that it may cause crop blockage seeing how much they gorge themselves. The same thing regarding what's left with the baby blanket -- if they start eating that stuff made from very fine cocoa husk fibers...

Right now I grow my grass, then pull them out of the mat and cut them up (the roots pull out easily and are LONG).

There is nothing on the bottom. It is a screened basket. I have a lot more detail on my website. It is mainly a humorous chicken website but there is a blog portion called "chickens and gardens" that has more detail on the sprouting. I haven't posted the part about the actual feeder I made but that will happen soon. www.workdaychickenpictures.com
