Wheaten and Blue wheaten Marans Discussion Thread

I was told they are Blue Maran x Wheatan Maran and could hatch out all four colors.

These were "bonus" eggs in a purchase I made of another breed so I only got 4 Maran eggs. All I know is that of the three that developed, two hatched. One was Wheaten, one "black" and the other died during hatch but it was a beautiful slate blue.

Forgive my cluelessness...

Hi All,
One of the problems with accepting ""bonus" eggs!!!" is we assume the person shipping the eggs "Knows " what they are talking about. As you discovered ... they do not. What was the hatch rate on "the other breed" you were really after?

The person I purchased from has been super nice and very helpful. I am not a breeder and I was simply after a few breeds to make my backyard flock and egg basket more colorful. That being said I asked for said "bonus eggs" of their choosing to add to my variety. I purchased 12 eggs, received extra and hatched 8. One was culled shortly after hatch due to an anomaly. Not bad for eggs shipped 700+ miles

I am thrilled with my little maran and even more happy to know she's a girl and will lay pretty chocolate eggs for me some day. I am thankful for everyone on BYC for all of their help and support as I am learning about the amazing and entertaining art of raising chickens. I do believe my breeder is both knowledgable and honest but perhaps misspoke or misunderstood the new projects lineage. I simply needed some advice on gender and color. I'll post pics of the "sibling" in a bit.

Blue is dominant to Wheaten and all the chicks from a true wheaten/blue cross will be blue. Bev Davis told me that when I was using a Wheaten rooster in a pen with blue hens.......She was right....every chick was a blue of some kind....some nice, some not so nice. Some of those blue pullets crossed back to a wheaten would produce some wheaten chicks but I scrapped that breeding experiment due to time and space involved. Some of the pullets feathered in with gold color on the hackles.....very pretty girls......but not what I was looking for.
