Wheaten and Blue wheaten Marans Discussion Thread

i wonder if , in the long history of wheaten marans if they ever looked better than whay we are all producing today ? i would think its a easy answer and it no. they are better now . also if roosters with white in wi.gs and tails produce nicer hens ( better cream colur) .thats a indacation we have to breed bad roos for good hens and bad hens for good roosters ? that would stink

Unfortunatly, probably yes. Same with the BCMs, a loud colored roo will put more hackle color on the ladies. They don't seem to help the male offspring though, so you get more overly red roos.

Randy, how are the combs doing in the Wheaten world? Do you guys see many sprigs or carnation combs within this variety??

some times they are very hard to hatch i usually go 45 percent humidity till lock down than 62 percent and yes wheaten marans are hard for some reason . i think its mostly fertility of roos .. just rest the eggs for a day whan you get them . id sudgest not candeling them every two seconds but thats just me... there is a dry hatch method but iv never tried it..

Thank you Randy, I will try that.

I hatch marans eggs alongside other breeds that lay white, blue and brown. They haven't been any harder to hatch unless they are very large. I have hatched hundreds of eggs, and have seen that usually the very largest eggs, of any variety, are the hardest to hatch.

I have been very successful with dry hatching all varieties, but haven't tried in the very driest dead of winter. I've been hatching a couple dozen every week here for the past 2 months, and only add water for the last 2-3 days. At that point the humidity is 60-65. Before that I don't even measure.
It doesn't seem to make any difference.
