Wheaten and Blue wheaten Marans Discussion Thread

Yeah, that stinks. You offer a VERY GENEROUS deal ... maybe he just ran out of checks and will send you one tomorrow?

At any rate, we are one week down and two to go. I'm so excited. I wish I could candle like some of the other people on here, but I don't know enough about it, would probably accidentally keep the stinkers and throw out the good ones!

So I'll just wait and watch ...
Is it even possible to candle these dark eggs?

yes you might get some nice looking roosters from the odd looking hens i have just never used the odd or darker hens eather. what did the roo look like that u used with the " bad colored hens"?. my test hatch is due to hatch april 9. but i wont know for weeks after how they will turn out. i havent tried to hatch any from my main flock this year but i might start a batch this weekend.i need a roo with out white in tail coverts in wing when closed
i did it once by random breeding. good luck with your hatching and im gunna send u more eggs in a week or so . free . so dont worry il make sure u get a bunch of nice hens

Well I have re-homed the worst of the bad hens, but still have some. I was going to hang on to them for eating eggs until I got a good roo and a few more hens. These "bad hens" came from ordered eggs. I have them in with a backyard flock with a turken rooster. I was tempted to let them hatch a few just to see what the cross would look like, but then I am afraid that it would be hard to tell them from the true wheaten babies if they didn't come out with the naked neck. Haha!

Thank you for all of your help! And I will be happy to pay you for the eggs!!

I made a shiitake mushroom log a few years ago. I got a few the first year and nothing since! I guess the spores just didn't make it through our hot summers. Supposedly morels grow in our area, but I've yet to find one.

I think that aside from Orpingtons and their close cousin, Australorps, my Marans hens are the gentlest birds in my flock. On Saturday my daughter and I were sitting in the clover taking in the fresh air when part of my younger flock came by. I hatched these out in December, so they're almost four months old. One of the Marans pullets let my daughter give her a few pats before slowly meandering away. My daughter's just 11 months old, so she can be a little rough, but this pullet let her tag along, crawling behind squealing with delight, without acting startled at all. It endeared the breed all the more to me!

So my Wheatens from Bev are getting old enough I can sex them. It looks like I have 10 pullets and 13 roos. Those of you that sell eggs and chicks, what do you think is a good number of pullets to keep? I am thinking 6...? I will keep a roo, may be two if one ends up being a blue wheaten. Opinions?
