Wheaten and Blue wheaten Marans Discussion Thread

I have not heard that one before. I know bev got hers from here black tailed buffs or so she told us on the yahoo duckwing/salmon marans forum. I got mine from my blue's they had this recessive gene in them which through salmon chicks once in a while. Although since I have gotten rid of my blue male that carried that gene and just kept several silver and golden salmon hens I have since placed them in with my wheaten roo to bring out some more traits hopefully. I have a couple test hatchs coming up so we will see. Just remember Silver is doment and golden is recessive. Hens can only carry either the silver or the golden gene, were males can carry both. I have learned allot on that forum. preety intrested to see all the different color variations on them though.

yippeeee! Happy for you Debbi!. If what I've been reading over on the Marans thread is true that wheatens can be used for making silver salmons when crossed with cuckoos...I might be interested in wheatens myself haha Down the road that is...i've gotta get my pens all sorted out for building

yup....indeed on the silver and gold info. unfortunately i'm all too familiar with that where I raise birchens. I honestly think its one of the worst things for me when I have a gorgeous lookin pullet and then they start developing gold hackles..... talk about heartbreaker! grr
I'm not sure on the info how accurate it is, I just have been reading in on a couple of conversations here and there and have heard it tossed out...but I'm not even gonna allow my brain to start mulling it over...I've got so much work to do around here with the breeds and colors I have...

Oh, don't even get me going on another color!

Wheatens were my first choice, but when I went to buy some, no one was selling. Only after I bought my ill-fated BCMs, did I discover this place!

Live and learn. Let's hope this is a decent hatch for me!!!!

Had to mow the grass again today, in March, really?? More tree trimming and planning on two different spots for pens. I can side in my lean-to on the shed for starters, and make a big run off of it. When more money comes in (HA!), I can get the shed converted in whole, and add more pens. The other spot is for seperating the Silkies by color. What have I gotten myself into???

I know exactly what you mean I only have 1 color that really needs no help except egg color can always be darker. Other then that all other need help in one way or more. I would take a look at the forum if you are interested in them though because they very so much. People have several silver salmon roos on there that to me look like birchons

but this is a color that is a very big project for many so allot of variations with them. I thought they had to have the salmon breast no matter wither they were goldens or silvers but many do not.

haha don't ya love how the addiction kind of just takes over and everything you look at has potential for being used for poultry!

Oh yeh! And, at least this go I won't feel like I will have to hold onto a bunch of roos until they are a year old! Six months max! If you ain't trippin' my trigger by then, you are OUTTA HERE!!

yeah...I'm interested in salmons...silvers that is...and would love to see blue silver salmons. if they are even out there in the Marans!
my favorite is someone in MO or IL I think advertises on ebay that they have silver SOLOMONS....looked at pics and to me in the pics they look like cuckoos?! Talk about scratching your head ? As far as I know in salmons they should have the salmon breast regardless of the color variety
btw....did you mean there is a forum for salmons on byc? If so, I'd love to know where its at....and if its not on here, I'd still love to know where its at!

I agree with that...by the time my roos are 6 months I've culled probably about 85 to 90% of all the roos. Its just too expensive to try to feed all those roos!

u all have totaly lost me on the outher colors. i wouldnt no a silver from a bc lollol i just stick with wheaten i have 5 silkie hens and a roo 3 EE 2 plymouth rocks and some silkiee partrage rock crosses and my wheaten marans about 12 and a few roo lol i cant try to learn anything else untill i matser the west coast swing .my 2 step is ok and my waltz . some people say im good at WCS but i think they were drinkin lol take care all

Can we talk about the broodiness of these birds?? I have been amazed because I had been told marans were not very broody. That was the only thing I was disappointed about with the wheatens. However, I am not disappointed any more! I now have two hens setting and a third acting like she may start any day. I have been taking their eggs for eating because they are just in with a mixed flock until I get a good roo and re-home a couple more badly colored hens from the first batch mentioned earlier. So they have just stolen my muscovy nests. Lol! Anyone who knows muscovy knows that stealing their nest is not an easy matter. I like this breed more every day. Now, I am so excited that I've got eggs in the 'bator from berkeleysprings and hopefully will have some very nice full-grown birds in the near future.
