Wheaten and Blue wheaten Marans Discussion Thread

Randy, you have to go to the SOP for that as it was left out on purpose. This is covered in the DQs for all breeds. If you remember Walt took this to the full committee last year at Shawnee and hey said it would be a DQ.

Don, I don't have the SOP book yet, but isn't it stated in the Marans that anything more than 1/2" of white was considered a DQ? I know I read that somewhere, maybe on the MCCU site? As for the white fluff in the tail coverts, don't pretty much all breeds with the Wheaten coloring display this? Is this why it is only considered a fault? If only a fault, Randy, don't discount otherwise good roos!!!

Debbi, We went through all these faults and DQs last year with Walt when they were coming up with the Standard. White in wing, tail and shank or toe is a DQ. the white fluff in the tail coverts is a Faults. This is what the full Committe said at the Big meet in Washington state.

I can not say too much or will be on vacation again.

 I know, I know. Don't go there!

Very confusing though for those of us without the SOP defects and book to go by. Here is what the SOP calls DQs as far as the Marans goes, says nothing about white feathers, but then, that must be in the APA books??

[/Disqualifications (approved 7/26/10)

Yellow on shanks or toes. White ear lobes. Pearl or black eyes. Absence of feathers on shanks. (See General Disqualifications and Cutting for Defects.)

Okay Snowbird you are right, he is, and I am here and listening just as hard as I can. How do you do it? And thanks for offering!
Last year out of all the Wheaten males I raised only had a couple with cottontail coverts. What I have been doing is culling the cottontail males and I only use breeders that are a little darker in the undercolor. This will also help with the white in wing and tail. Now remember the standard calls doesn't call for the dark undercolor but you cannot breed males without the white if you use the light undercolor fowl. Ask any questions you would like.

Randy , has a lot of experience with wheaten Marans also.

Don, Do you still have your wheatens?? Describe darker undercolor. SOP calls for grey, so somewhere in between grey and black? And what about the under color for the hens? Should it be darker too since they contribute towards the males' coloring?
