Wheaten and Blue wheaten Marans Discussion Thread

Any of you eating your extra cockerels? What age do you usually butcher?

I plan to. With other breeds I've raised, I butchered around 25 weeks. It's later than some people would do it, but I like to give them time to flesh out more. I've got a Jersey Giant/Wheaten Marans cross cockerel that I'm going to put over some random hens to get layers/broilers. With those I might wait 'til 6 months because of the Giant blood.

Hi. I should have some next year. I am getting wheaten chicks in may so I will have to grow them out and work for my breeding stock. So hopefully there should be a few good started chicks looking for a home by this time of the year. (Started means several weeks old)

I am in northeast georgia, an hour north of Atlanta.
Hi, I live in Dawsonville, GA. Have a question about Wheaten Marans. I got eggs from a man at the Newnan show. They are suppose to be from the Bev Davis line. I have one yellow chick that hatched. It was born yellow but with black "spines" on the ends of its wings. Is this what I should have expected? It is only 4 days old, but the feathers are growing out white and black. Do I have a male? or do I need to wait a little more. I never had a wheaten marans and was surprised to see the black spines thru the yellow fuzz. Thanks for your opinions.

it's perfectly normal they all hatch and grow wing feathers like that. some hatch white some hatch yellow most of mine always have hatch yellow 75%
. you're too young 2 sex . in a few weeks you'll be able to tell
I have some luck going by the shape of the wing. the more rounded to me means a hen

Thx for the pics, I was going to ask what color everyone's chicks were hatching out... yellow, white, yellow with dots on heads, etc?? Good tip on the wing shape, to, I will watch that and see what happens with mine=)

Here is the chick I hatched last week. It was born with black spines in the wing area under all the yellow fuzz. It is suppose to be a Wheaten Marans. Can you tell sex yet? I got the eggs from a man who had entered his eggs in the Poultry show in GA.

I fail to see anything out of the ordinary. Do you believe the black should not be in the wings, will eventually have black in the tail feathers also.
