Wheaten and Blue wheaten Marans Discussion Thread

I can see white in some of the pics and I can see what appears to be white in some of the pics, but they are just not good enough to be so certain about what it really is. There is no question that the Wheatens have this fluff problem, I'm just saying that the pictures are not good enough to make an absolute determination. As a judge I have seen a lot of white at the base of colored birds tails and because of that I know that it is not always fluff.

My bottom line is: The pics are not good enough to determine anything for sure. I believe tail fluff is a problem, but so is white in the tail and that white in the tail is not always at the tip of the tail. Sometimes it is at the base. I have a graphics background at the university level and I know that pictures are not always accurate as there are photographic effects caused by sheen in feathers that make things appear white. I am only trying to let people know that what they see in a pic is not always what they think it is. The ONLY way to tell for sure is to have a close up pic or see the bird in person. Fluff is a cut not a DQ, but a bird with fluff will never win anything in a real show.

BTW: I personally hate to see fluff and will cull one of my birds if it shows fluff at the tail no matter how good it is in any other way.

It is a defect, so it is a cut in points. A perfect bird, if there was such a thing and there is not would have 100 points.

Off to OK.......

Randy, after Walt mentioned about the tail Coverts usually being where the white was at on the tail, I went out and checked may males and that is where the white is coming from, The white goes about 1/2 way up the tail covert feather and is real fluffy. Now to figure out a way to get rid of it is the question. Don

o great news , i dont care how many points they take , im just happy to be on the team , no matter if im the towl boy lol i dont mind working to get the fluff out , i wonder if ,like me haveing a closed flock started from 5 birds from 2 different breeders (i have 15 now ) i wonder if i have enough diversity , i know my flock will produce some lighter and darker hens in last test mateings i did i hope that ma be the cause and cure lol lol

Well, pictures don't always tell the full story.

There is white fluff at the base of the tails on the males.

There is no white on any other feathers that I am aware of, I will take a close look this weekend.

I do not see any cotton tail on the males, do they have the cottontail at the base of tail and end of back ? Do they have any white in wing and tail ? Thanks, Don

I haven't entered or attended poultry shows so.... If a hen or rooster is docked points for fluff and other defects can the bird still win best of breed or is there a cut off at say 80 points. Below 80 point and the best the bird could attain is second place.
Also, if the fluff is plucked, does it grow back white or the proper color?
Joe
