Wheaten and Blue wheaten Marans Discussion Thread

If any one has an idea on how to breed the Wheaten to get some without the cottontail please post something as I only have two males after culling everything with white in wing and tail. I know if I use these I will get more of the thing, I am on a deadend street and no way to turn around and not reverse. Don

The only way I can think of is to breed them with bcm that has a black/dark undercoat and then you would have to breed the wheaten feather etc. coloring back in. I don't know what that would do to the female wheaten though it would be hard to get back to the light female wheaten coloring...that's why I think the wheatens are probably supposed to have the light undercoat.

SORRY 3 out woohoo

I have 3 more that should hatch and 3 that were questionable. It's day 23 but breeder says that they've sometimes thrown eggs away and heard them peeping in the garbage later! so they said to leave them in longer. I'll wait through saturday just in case

Anyone else have experience with late hatch times?

I have had a few hatch up to 4 days late that is when my incubator was running a little low, I think. Congrats on your babies!! I am so jealous of your wheaten egg color!

The cotton ball fluff is also visible on my Blue Wheaten Ameraucana rooster, I've never even thought of it being a fault, or a DQ for that matter. I'll have to reread the standard for Ameraucana and see if this is acceptable. Almost every Wheaten based bird I have seen, whether it be a Marans or an Ameraucana, has the white profusion at the base of the tail.

So, I'm with Don- how on earth is it expected for us to breed this trait out if every bird has it?

Does the French standard speak to this at all?

Jeremy, I donot see anything on the French site about the cottontail but everyone says it is a fault, I know for a fact that a lot of breed has this fault and would like to hear from someone that has worked with this fault. If we only knew where it was coming from and what was causing it to be there. Don
