Just not wheaties (I'm patiently - yeah right!) waiting for eggs or something from Buddy for the rest of my wheatie flock.

AND I was getting a little burnt out on the dust in the bator/brooder room etc...and it's rainy yucky outside...then my lonely cold bators called out to me and while I was picking up my amazing silver pencilled plymouth rock rooster (WOOHOO HE IS AMAZING) from lotsapaints I also got Indian River (Del roo over New Hampshire hens) and Partridge rock eggs. I set them yesterday.... so there!

My baby Wheatie is growing, growing, growing! She's already double the size of her Pene brooder buddy (who I think may be a little boy...) and she's got tail feathers sprouting from her little bottom. I'm actually surprised at how quickly she is growing/developing. Is fast rate of growth very typical with Marans? I'll need to remember to build a bigger brooder for the little piggys in the springtime.

Maybe I'm getting confused with heritage breeds but I think I read a slow growth is better...IDK

Good Marans are like that big bruisers.. all of our Marans should be fast feathering it just takes them a long time to mature and fill out I have 2 in with chicks 10 days younger they are giants but the others will catch up by them time they are 4 months old I'll have to look at the leg bands

Can someone help me understand this....can we put Wheaten and Blue Wheaten Marans in the same breeding pen? Or do we need to keep those colors separated to breed true? Any help is appreciated.

well thank you i didnt candle and never do but mabe tomarrow evening il have a few chicks , started collecting eggs for next hatch in a few days and thats when the real hatching starts but i diont know about the fertility , i havent seen the big guy mounting the girls much . i use a light on a timer to give the girls some more daylight from 4 :00 to 8:00 pm with a light on a timer to get eggs comeing in The temperature in marans coop is 43 degrees and outside is around 25 i guess the insolation is working ,and there littler hot breath is putting out some heat.....Last year with out insulation was hard on the combs on the big davis roos this year is better.....
