Welcome back Don!

Pink, thanks for your very clear explanation of the blue gene!! In other words, you're either blue or your not. Makes sense to me seeing as how the blue is a dilute of black. I can also see Don's concern, and indeed his way of breeding would make sure the colors are pure. Either way seems fine to me, although those of us with less acreage and coopage, will be using the combined method.

Okay...I didn't ask for this information, but Gary Cree sent this in an email to me this morning along with info on his shipping policies. This is his exact quote...hope it helps.

Wheatens crossed with Wheatens produce all Wheatens. Wheatens crossed with Blue Wheatens produce 50% Wheatens and 50% Blue Wheatens. Blue Wheatens crossed with Blue Wheatens produce 50% Blue Wheatens, 25% Wheatens and 25% Splash Wheatens

Sure, that makes total sense. Just as in the case of a Blue bred to a Blue, you get the same percentage combination.

YES! That is what I am taking to the bank...it is the same for my silkies, polish, ameraucanas, etc, etc, just wasn't sure with the Wheaten/Blue Wheaten of the Marans. And if this future breeding program of mine shows some "weird" genetics and unfavorable attributes, Snowbird...you will be the first person I let know!

And you can tell me "I told you so"!

The only question I have with the Wheaten and Blue Wheaten is the putting back of the wheaten colored young fowl with the wheaten brood yard. Too many unknown genetic faults at present to breed just any cross back into the wheaten.

Look back in the Marans thread on BYC and see all the faults that have showed up when people start showing pictures of their Marans, not just one line either. All of the faults had to come from somewhere and I do not have the answer of where. It for sure is time to go back to the old fashion way and do some single matings until we find something that will produce like themselves.

Just want to say that I have a wheaten young male that does not have the cottontail. He came from eggs I purchased from nivtup last spring.

Will go into what I see when going over this male with a fine tooth comb. He has a darker colored undercolor that the males that show the cotton. His tail coverts the cotton does not go near as high as it does on the other males. Will state again that I believe the cotton ball is the result of too light undercolor.

Randy, look at your male without the cotton and see what color of undercolor you have and let me know so I can write it in my books. Also see how high the white undercolor on the coverts goes. I have noticed on mine that it is lower in total.
