Wheaten and Blue wheaten Marans Discussion Thread

nice clean looking hens ,nice light color , the first one is going to have a huge, good looking comb i can already see a nice rear blade looks to be 1/2 inch long at 3 months , the combs on hens are harder then the roos to get right and to me , first one is right from what i can see

Pretty girl, VC.

I have a question about how far forward the cream/white coloring is supposed to go on the hens. I've seen some end with the wheat coloring ending in the breast about the level of the front part of the wing, then others have the wheat color extend more towards the middle of the belly. Does that make any sense? Personally, I like the looks of the first type better. It makes more of a distinction between the three colors, but I would like to know which is more correct.

Good question. I think less on the breast is better. But I wonder if too little wheat on the chest affects rooster color in the offspring. I'd bet Don knows.
I also wonder if her adult color will be any different, if she'll molt out lighter or darker.

My personal preference too. I like them to be cream/white from the wing level down. That's a good point about the roo coloring. Wonder if it would have anything to do with the underfluff/coverts at the base of the tail in the roos? Here again, one pen for good colored roos and one for good colored hens??

We have kinda stayed away from the descriptions lately hoping the MCCUSA will complete the proposed standard. Will give you what I believe to be correct on the proposed Show wheaten marans female. The front of neck and chest should be cream for a SOP type wheaten.

For raising the wheaten male we should use a female with more wheaten in the neck and chest area and hopefully a little darker undercolor. This is where the single matings come into play.

Hi Don,
Since blue wheaten's can be produced from wheaten birds is MCCUSA working on a blue wheaten standard or will they wait for blue wheaten numbers to increase before adding another class to the show circuit?

Thanks,
Joe

Hi Joe, I can say for sure that the wheaten have been approved to be next in line. From what I have read on line the Cuckoo and White are ready. They have did all the Qualifying requirements.

Bev Davis would be the one to contact about the Blue wheaten.
