. i have a 4x8 coop opening up this weekend i might use
but it will b 3 months to be at breeding age

I have a blue wheaten roo I like a lot, but he is small, so if anyone wants him for your bantam projects come on over! Actually I slipped in the forum to see if anyone in the San Diego area might have wheaten chicks or pullets. Or even eggs. Don't have a broody now, but one never knows

I have a wheaten roo, I'm trying to find some hens for him or he's gotta go.

And really, if someone wants the blue roo, he's free. Hatched in Feb. 2011 out of eggs from Bev D. I might have a BC roo too.

It's been about a month an a half since I took photos of my Cree Farm birds and they have changed a lot. I'm getting ready to cull and there are a few I don't think I want in my flock but I am unsure.

I have two girls with chest like this

yes your right on the money the wheat showing up in the chest should be culled or rehomed because it will only get worse , but dont cull to soon on the hens because they could lighten up some with age like in this pictuyre of a young pullet has some wheet in chest but it all went away after she aged

not that my birds are anything special but this is kindof what to breed to

I keep seeing people say not to cull for wheatens early. What is the appropriate time? I know some people have said after the juvenile molt -- is that when they are about one year old? I posted a while back on this thread about the 10 hens and 1 rooster that I hatched. The rooster was the red one that I believe the consensus was he was a BTB. Anyway, two of the hens are definitely off. One is red with black spots (almost like pics of some of the juvenile roos recently posted on this thread) and the other one is the one I had posted before. However, I'm not sure about the other 8 hens. They are 19 weeks old. Also, I am still trying to find a rooster. I am attaching pictures of the only three I have been able to find in Alabama. Any input??

The person who is selling roo 3 bought from the same flock I did, so I know there is potential for off-colors. He looks better than mine though. The flock is supposed to lay very nice dark eggs and it looks like I will have to do lots of selecting and heavy culling to get the correct plumage color anyway, so he is still on the table unless you guys think that is a bad idea. (His leg feathering also looks darker than the other two, which I think is a plus?) The lady I bought the eggs from was polite (except for seemingly ignoring my e-mail for a while when I asked if I could BUY more eggs to try for a roo ) but didn't seem to feel obligated to help me on this; so I'm just going to work with what I have. They were good to deal with before and I would probably order from them again. Her packaging was great and she was pleasant to work with. I guess from her standpoint, she is advertising wheaten marans, not SHOW QUALITY wheaten marans (which I am good with, I just wish the rooster hatched from the wheaten marans eggs was actually a wheaten maran!). She also said she had not had this problem. I don't know how many of her eggs she has actually hatched. Oh well ... back to topic ...what do you think? I think roo 1 and 2 are about 10 - 11 wks old. Roo 3 is an older pic (according to the seller) and I'm not sure about the age yet. He is supposed to be sending a more updated pic soon. If he does, I will post it.

Thanks for the help Berkeleysprings. I think Wheaten Marans are truly the prettiest of the Marans color varieties with the greatest personalities. I want to learn to breed these birds to the purposed standard and help promote these beautiful birds. So all the examples and advice is greatly appreciated. I'll hold on to the others for a little longer to see if they lighten up in the chest. If not I still have a nice trio to start off with and the rest will make nice layers for the laying pen.
Also that hen is gorgeous!

I can't wait till I have more hens like her.

Cukooformarans- I'm still learning but I would not get roosters 2 and 3 both are way over colored and from my experience as they get older they get more color not less. number 1 is hard to judge because he is really slow to feather as it would appear but I think he will give you the best place to start breeding toward the standard. As I said I'm still learning so I maybe wrong.

i hope some of the pictures help to judge colors also some might appear to have floppy combs , my advise , dont cull early for that give em a year to stiffen up
i have no perfect birds and i am still learning so i dont want to come across like i know alot
all ive learned is from the 4 years with my flock and i am so lucky
i got stock from the great bev davis and budy henery befor they stoped selling directly hope the pictures help people on what to look for

cull early for leg color (yellow shanks ) or comb deforms . sometimes color can be culled early , but it depends ,i am sorry to say , my thoughts on the 3 roo you pictured are not good , and id rehome them , it should be easy to find more eggs to hatch , to try for more roosters , if i knew 100% certanity that iv solved my wellow shank troubles id send u some , i have no adult birds with yellow but in sibling breding i had 3 appear but im close to haveing it under control
and il be test breeding very soon , due to hatch in ten days
