Wheaton Maran x Black Copper Maran

all you have to do is keep breeding these chicks to the parent line you want most, example, if you want more wheaten maran just breed them back to that...after all they are marans and lay nice dark eggs...

So, I have a Marans rooster that I am fairly certain is a Wheaten Marans. The lady we got him from said he was a Marans (he is), but didn't know what color he was. The hens she was selling with him were Black Coppers Marans and some other color/build that definitely weren't Marans like she thought.
ANYWAY! My thought/question is: So a test breeding of this roo over BCM hens is not going to tell me what color he is...at least not in the first generation, if ever, because they will be visually similar to BCM chicks. However, if I breed him to Wheaten hens, the chicks will be visually identical to BCMs if he is a BCM, or they will be Wheaten if he is, indeed, Wheaten. Is this correct?
Understand that this particular flock is only a hobby flock for my own amusement and consumption. I'm not trying to dupe anyone, as I already have a quality flock of B/B/S Marans from reputable lines.

I used to breed pigeons and it got me mad when people crossed breeds. But not this mad. People do things for experiment at times and it's logical, don't always be emotional, So please use your logic...you professional hobbyists.
