When buying straight run chicks do they allow you to pick the chicks or do they just go in and grab

I found a breeder locally who sells Black Copper Marans that are straight run 4 weeks old. Think they would let me pick or do they normally just grab some and that is what you get?

You can always ask. If they do let you chose, don't pick any with patches of red on the shoulders. Choose the ones that have the smallest, most yellow combs.

Most breeders will let you pick out the ones you want, but it does just depend on the breeder. I'd give them a call and just ask nicely if they are willing to let you pick out your own chicks. Best of luck and congrats on getting the newbies!

Impossible for me to say what someone else would let you do

. I'd sure ask, though. And if I were the seller, I'd let the buyer chose, as long as they didn't dither around and take all blessed day about it....had one lady literally want to spend over an hour picking her chicks once. Sorry, for the money I don't have that much time

I definitely would not take that long!! lol Sounds awful. I would just want to pick the ones with the smallest combs out of the bunch. My last straight runs I ended up with 5 roos and 4 hens. Not a good deal. He did not let me pick. They were in a cage and at the back. He said that if I tried to reach in they would all fly out. He also said he "thought" that he was giving me all girls. As soon as I came home I read up on how to tell and could tell pretty much what they were. Some had one row of lines and some had 3 rows. The 3 rows were boys. That was my first time buying chicks (they were 5 weeks). My first hens were 10 months when I bought them and the woman went into a pen and came out holding 4 birds by their legs upside down She stuffed them in a box in my car. I did not see them till I got home. One was totally bald on her back from a rooster and now the others keep picking at her. She developed a huge wound and I had to buy hen saddles. If I had been able to pick I would not have picked a bald chicken. She is by best later though!
