I can't find the chick grit in my area and have been using sand with tiny rocks in it. This works okay, but I'd rather have some grit to sprinkle on their food for their once a day treats. They're 5 weeks old. Is regular chicken grit to big for them?

Probably so!! Do you have a Wal-Mart close to you?? If you do get some parakeet grit called "Grit & Gravel" Less that $2 for a box. You can also find chick grit at TSC!!!

No TSC within 40 miles of me. I have some parakeet grit that I was using for a few days until I realized it has calcium in it, so I didn't want to use that.

You said you had sand with small gravel right?? Just sprinkle that over their food... You should be fine using that!!

ETA: I swear I cannot speel tonight!!

You should be fine. I use contractors sand. I sprinkle on their food, and have a separate container now that they play in and scratch (especially when I put oatmeal on it)

I took a hammer and smashed the regular size grit into smaller peeices. My babies are 2 weeks old

I take a metal strainer (fine mesh type), put the regular grit into it, then push and roll it around in there. Small bits break off and fall through the mesh and onto their food.
